Question Update problems

I am trying to upgrade my sons computer it is an asrock x370 pro gaming, I originally put it together with a ryzen 3 1200, and windows has now stopped support for it so cant do any upgrades to windows, I want to install a ryzen 5 5600 I did all the update to install the cpu, now running a 7.3 bios, when I install the new cpu the computer doesnt recognize it and it just sits there not doing anything.. I put the old 1200 back in and it boots fine, I think I saw in a post someplace that said if I did the update with the 1200 that it only update 1/2 the bios? any help would be appreciated

Are you certain the the BIOS update to 7.30 fully completed?

What BIOS version were you on prior to P7.30? Did you make sure you installed the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard prior to updating the BIOS to version P7.30? Did you clear the CMOS after verifying the BIOS was successfully flashed to version P7.30?

it said the update was sucessfull, I had started with a 2.2 bios and update following the list of steps on asrocks site, 3.0 and then up from there until reaching the 7.3 where it is at now

I read on a post someplace and cant find it now that said if I updated to the 7.3 with the old 1200 chip it would have only update 1/2 the bios which is why it wont recognize the new cpu. I even went out and bought a cezanee 3600 and it wont recognize that either

As @Lutfij asked, did you reset the BIOS yourself while performing the updates? Or, just via the updates themselves?

I let the update reboot the computer with each one, and I have tried clearing the cmos nothing lets me see the new cpu, but it sill boots fine with the old 1200

When either the 3600 or 5600 is installed. How long did you let the system set after powering on? A minute or two? Or shorter?

a few minutes, all it does is the motherboard light kind of cycle up and down and nothing else lights up on the mini display at the bottom of the board, and after a minute or so it reboots itself but does the same thing

Does anything ever flash on-screen when either the 3600 or 5600 is installed?

nothing it never even boots just sits there board lights up with the background light that pulse up and down but nothing else, after a minute or so it reboots back to doing the same thing, I put in the old 1200 and it boots right up, it doesnt recognize either of the other cpus

Are you certain the two CPUs work? Where did you purchase them from?

got both off amazon new in the box still sealed

is there a way do do a bios update other than using the built in instaflash on the mobo?

Looks like that motherboard supports two versions of Instant Flash. One from a USB drive and the other via the internet, according to page 75 of the manual: https://download.asrock.com/Manual/Fatal1ty X370 Professional Gaming.pdf

Try this. start from a powered down system (I assume the 1200 is currently installed):

• Disconnect all power sources: Power cable, video cable, powered speakers, etc.
• Press the power button to discharge any residual power in the system (I am serious)
• Remove the coin-cell battery (note which side goes up)
• Wait at least 1 minute (probably not needed, but doesn't hurt)
• Now swap CPUs (from the 1200 to the 5600). Be sure to apply fresh thermal compound when installing the heatsink/CPU cooler.
• Replace the battery and reconnect the previously removed connections.
• Power on

yes I have done the bios updates from a usb flash drive, downloaded the files from my computer.
tried everything you said, still wont recognize the new cpu

When you stepped through the BIOS updates, did you install the 7.00 version on the way to 7.30?

yes.. 2.2 original went to 3.3 to 5.1 after installing amd all in 1, to 5.8 to 7.0 and finally 7.3 I even tried reflashing the 7.3

While I normally don't recommend them, I would try the most current beta version at this point. BIOS that is.

will try that next, I am about ready to dump the asrock, this in the first one I ever bought and will be the last, even all the asus boards over the years never gave me anywhere near this amount of grief

Asrock isn't bad. That era of motherboard has its challenges. That is the likely issue.
