Trying to decide what GPU to get

I want to get a new GPU.
I've looked at the Gtx 970's and R9 290X's.
I honestly dont know which to get.
My friends say that AMD cards will work better since next Gen consoles are AMD. Is that true?

I am either getting a card for Christmas or waiting for AMD's new cards. I dont really want to do that.

I just don't want to waste money.

Help is much appreciated.

No GTX 970 is currently one of the best performing gpu. It consumes less power than a R9 290X but is slightly faster than it.
You could wait and see what the R9 300 series if you want to but the GTX 970 is already a good gpu to go with.
Just because consoles are using AMD APUs, doesn't mean AMD cards will run are better.
