My old system bought in 2008 had following configuration:
AMD Athlon 64 x2 2.2 GHz AM2 brisbane
Asus M2NVM-DVI (PCI Express 1.0)
MSI Geforce N9600GT 512MB card
Glacial Power 550w GP-PS550BP (2 x 12 v rails, 18 A on each rail )
Transcend 667 MHz DDR2 2GB
Samsung 160 GB hard disk 7200 RPM
Moserbaer DVD-RW drive
15" CRT Monitor Compaq (1024x768)
Windows Vista Ultimate
2 years back my card started giving artifacts on demanding games like Far Cry 2. Less demanding games like Need For Speed Most Wanted ran fine on all maximum settings at resolution 1024x768. As the card was still under warranty, I sent it to service centre. After getting it back, I never used it. It was just lying there in ESD material in a bag for 2 years.
Now I suspect the problem might be with power supply and perhaps my graphics card was alright because later my processor also got fried.
Keeping the old PSU, GPU, hard disk and DVD drive I have built a new cheap system. I went to a local computer shop near my village in a remote place in India and they gave me exactly one choice for each piece of hardware:
AMD Athlon II x270 3.4 GHz AM3 regor
Gigabyte 78LMT-S2PT (PCI Express 2.0, AMD 760G)
UMAX RAM DDR3 1333 MHz 2 x 2GB (some local cheapie. will that be ok ? )
20 " LED Dell Monitor (1600 x 900 )
Windows 7 ultimate
Computer runs fine without the GPU. But when I insert the GPU, it doesn't get past 'starting' windows animation and restarts. I tried reinstalling windows but after loading files, the screen just freezes at 'starting' and doesn't even restart.
I need advice on which one is failing me the graphics card or the PSU ?
I have spent more than I can afford and getting extra piece of hardware is a concern for me.
Also whether 600VA UPS will be good enough for this system ?
EDIT : Is it good enough PSU for my system
