Tualatin temperature

I've recently put together a dual P3 system in a 1u case. And i'm sketched about the CPU temps. Both are 1.2ghz tualatins with a standard low profile copper heatsink + fan. obviously nothing else fits in this case. Both are ~100f as soon as it turns on. I finally mustered up enough courage to let it boot into the OS, and then immediately reboot so i can get back into the cmos and check out the temps. i was at 108 and the other was at 111. Is this normal operating temperatures? i figure since my P4 HT OCd to 3ghz runs at ~95f while playing games, and ~75 idle. this isn't normal. then again i have a zalman flower for a heatsink on that badboy. what's the general opinion? if i drop this off at a NOC and leave it alone. how long before the core starts to warp? lol

oh, also i was wondering about something else. no matter what i set the dip switches to on my mobo the bios always tells me i have 2 1.425ghz processors, but both of the processors have 1.266ghz clearly printed on them. did i luck out?

The Tualies are good to 130f (55c), where they may start to get a little flakey. The have built in overtemp, that will keep them from frying. It sounds like the fsb is set a little high. That's why the extra heat. Check to make sure the voltage is right.
1u cases usually have/need lots of fans, so make sure you have good circulation. Make sure you have as many fans blowing in as out.

Yah, i'd agree about the fsb being too high. but it all checks out. the voltage is @ 1.45 and the fsb is set via dip switches on the mobo. and it's set to 133mhz - so i dunno what's up. but you think even if it gets up to 120+ the processor will still perform at top speeds?

120f should be no problem. It is a little warmer than normal though, so check your case air flow.

w0rd - so the way i have it setup is:

but i'm not sure if mine is a vantec. so yah. there's a fan blowing through the heatsink, and there's another fan above the heatsinks pulling air out of the case.

now i have no problems with cutting into this case. but does anyone have any suggestions concerned with keeping the temperatures very low. keep in mind it's a 1u case.

My Tuallies run at 36/37ºC (96/98ºF) at 24/7/365 100% proccessor load but in a slightly larger <A HREF="http://www.enermax.com.tw/products_cases2.php?Tid=2&gon=285&Gid=30&Gid2=21" target="_new">Enermax CS-10182</A> case. Make sure your airflows are set up right, you have a fan blowing <i>out</i> above the heat sink fans? That should be blowing in unless you have the fans reversed on the heatsinks as well, which probably isn't a good idea unless you have a great airflow coming in through the front of the case, which it doesn't sound like you do.

So you suggest that fan to be blow air in, and to reverse the fan that's blowing air through the fins to blow air out? Seems logical i guess. A friend of mine hinted at a peltier plate. i'm gonna do a 2 week long experiment with an empty case to see about condensation. experiment with blowers, and air flow. i never thought it'd be this much of an issue with a P3 but if only i can get cold air to circulate through the case i might have a fighting chance. my goodness - the other day i decided to bite the bullet and run it just long enough to get lm-sensors downloaded. (note: not installed ;/ ) before flaking out (i'd say around 10 mins into gnome) and rebooting into cmos to find out they were running at 156f each!! this is really getting to be an excercise in impossibility. Like tic tac toe. WTF?

A top blowhole is only any use if your airflows are from bottom to top (cold air in bottom, hot air exit top). In a 1U case that isn't possible and your airflow must be almost entirely front to back. A <A HREF="http://www.rackmount.com/Rackacc/CPU-P3-B1.htm" target="_new">blower</A> fan can work better in the 1U case. If you can get 1U cases that support Xeon 3GHz I'm certain you can get 2 Tualatins in there.

The guys over at <A HREF="http://www.2cpu.com" target="_new">2cpu.com</A> built a <A HREF="http://www.2cpu.com/articles/46_1.html" target="_new">2U tulatian server in a 1U case</A> no problem.
