The main advantage of the Turris project is not only Open Source SW and HW and automated SW updates. The main advantage is adaptive firewall which is modified online NIC.cz (as the administrator of .CZ domain) in reaction on current network security analysis.

"The Turris Omnia will install firmware updates itself using a unique, automated security update system. "

Yay - automated updates from an outside source that you don't control - what could possibly go wrong? Put me down for two! 😉

With this kind of project, you'd expect that a feature like that can be turned off. They're not Microsoft

Or during that large ISO download (or in the middle of a raid), your device updates itself and reboots.... 🙁

It does not. The reboots can be done manually or scheduled to deep night for you (that means 9AM after the late boss fights :). You will also get a notification about the upcoming reboot, so you will be always informed when that happens.

Pretty tough to compete with Open-Mesh / Cloudtrax.com with these.

Feature wise the Turris is pretty lame by comparison.

Depends on the intended usage and your needs. The article already lists the hardware specs, so I won't repeat them, and the software is open by design, so it's more than a just WiFi AP.
