I upgraded my internet speed from 50mb download to 100mb download so Time Warner told me i will need a new modem to receive the full speed. After trying to setup the modem and running into some problems with it, i finally got it to work but now on my PS4 and PS3 i receive lower speeds than before. My main concern is the PS4 though. I have it wired to my router and that connected to the modem. I tried connecting it directly to the modem but it made no difference. On my computer i receive full speed from the new Modem. I contacted Sony to see if it was a problem with the PS4 and newer modems and they told me to restore to factory settings and then to open some ports and set NAT type to 2. I did all of that and no change, I think its the new modem that is the problem.

Router: Linksys E2000
Modem: Arris TG1672G
Devices connected to router: WiFi (Two cell phones) Wired ( Two PCs, PS4, PS3)
PS4 speeds Old Modem: 40-50 DL and 5-9 UP
PS4 speeds New Modem: 25-40 DL and 1.5-4 UP
PC speeds New Modem: 80-100 DL and 8-10 UP

With the new modem i had some problems setting it up. It was a Router/Modem but the TWC WiFi software that i was given wouldn't work properly. I had a wired to connection to the modem from my PC at this time because i removed the Linksys router to see if i could use the built in router. The program couldn't find a network adapter even though i was on the internet, so i couldn't set up WiFi from it. I believe they later disconnected the router ability from their side. So i then connected back my Linksys to the Modem but connected both PCs to the Modem instead.

I then ran into another problem, every time i turned off my PC and turned it back on it would give some error about ip configuration and i would have to reboot the modem and let troubleshoot configure to connect. I believe the Router and Modem were giving two different ip addresses. I called TWC and they said to only plug into Linksys router and that solved the problem.

Today i tried running the TWC WiFi software again to see if maybe i need to enable the ports on the modem and this time it found a network adapter when I'm connected to the Linksys router but when it tried to setup afterwards it said something about can't connect to gateway. The WiFi is probably still turned off so maybe that's why.

I have no idea why i have lower speeds on my PS4 even though the internet is faster and i haven't added extra devices. Anyone know what to do? If i can't find a solution i will either have to lower my speed back to 50 and see if i can get back my old modem or pay for even faster internet and hope it raises the PS4 speed enough so i can use it for what i want.

I told them about it a couple weeks ago when i first received it and was trying to set it up and the guy checked to make sure everything was setup correctly and reset the modem from their side a few times but it still had the problems so he said wait 48 hours cause sometimes it needs time to adjust. That sounded like he was out of ideas and wanted to get me off the line. If i call back they are either gonna say its Sony fault or send someone to check it out but that will be inconvenient for me right now so i want to see if i can try everything else first.

Bob,

You are running into a double NAT situation my friend. Time Warner used to have cable modem only; Arris and one other brand I don't recall. When they recently decided to give customers extra speed they moved away from old DOCSIS cable modems to gateways (modem/wireless router combos). So now when you hook your router up to the Time Warner "modem" you're actually running two routers in series. Both routers are trying to assign DHCP addresses, resolve DNS, and NAT. It causes major performance issues, can block internet traffic, and render port forwarding moot. You need to login to the TWC gateway and disable the following: wireless 2.4 and 5GHz radios, DHCP, firewall, and place it into bridge mode. Then your Linksys router will handle all duties as before and the TWC will essentially be converted back into a modem. You may need to make modification to your linksys router settings to handle the increased throughput or possibly upgrade to a gaming router. Wireless AC routers are a worthwhile investment even if you don't have devices that currently support it. You will get the benefit of stronger processing power, newer firmware, and increased throughput. I recently switched to a TP-Link Archer C9 router and I'm no longer dropping signal or lagging in BF4. You can't trust the PSN network test because the geo-location is unknown. I used a few and average 30-35Mbps down and 13-20Mbps up on wireless. I still have some tweaking to do, but I suspect part of the issue is also TWC network issues. Hopefully, Google Fiber will solve that problem. Otherwise, it will certainly lend credence to Sony cap limiting to cover for shoddy network infrastructure.
