Hi

I am having issues with two HDD.

1. WD Green 2 TB
I am not sure if I have important data on this, But it will be great if I can get it working.. With this drive connected, Windows (10) starts bit late, I can see the disk in Disk Management but unable to initialize. Tried rebuilding MBR but it didn't help. I just tried to open and see the internals. The head is at its parking place.

When I opened to see inside, the head repeatedly moves to the middle and returns to starting position.

2. WD Black 1 TB
I don't think I have any important data on this. Only games and Apps. With this connected I could not start windows at all.

When I turn on the PC, it moves a bit into the disc, and gets stuck there with a grinding noise.

Any DIY suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The black is toast. The heads are long gone, worn off by scrapping the platters, which also damaged the platters.

The Green appears to not be able to read. A new board is all you can try but there may be a chip you will need to transfer to the replacement which contains the drives specific configuration. Pics of both sides of the board would help get you a replacement.

Did this PC take a fall or get hit while it was on?
its all I could come up with on why 2 hdd's in a pc would suddenly have head damage.
When you have stomach pain, do you grab a knife from the kitchen and slice your belly open and check out the insides?

This is where you check the inside of a hard drive.

This is where you do not.

At least you made the decision to pay for recovery an easy one; if recovery is not now impossible, it's harder than it previously was.

Honestly I did expect responses like 'Oh you just killed your HDD'.

I want to make it clear that my choices would be either fixing it myself or throwing it into trash. I am not keen to spend for data recovery services. Nor am I going to sit and weep for losing the data.

I want to know what exactly could be wrong in these drives and if there's anything I can do to fix it myself. Thanks for the responses though.

In their present condition? No, there is pretty much nothing you can do to get them back to a working state.
The platter surface is going past the read/write head at about 110 kph, with a clearance of maybe 3 nanometers. A single speck of dust is enough to kill it.

Hard drives are mostly "No user serviceable parts inside".
In theory, it might have been the components on the PCB failing. With certain drives you can replace that PCB, and it might work again.

All that is academic though. These are now Fridge Magnet Donors.
