Type of Pencil. :)

Hi all, I just got a Duron 700 with EPoX EP-8KTA+, and I'd like to overclock it.. from what I've read, all I need to do is connect all the L1 bridges and then modify the dips on the motherboard. Is that right? Please respond.. Now, I am connecting the L1 bridges with a lead pencil, will that work? And here's the real question: what sort of pencil is best? I used a 2B but I'm not sure if different pencils have different conductivity... read somewhere that someone o/c-ed his Duron with an HB pencil..

I used HB pencil on my Duron. I've heard that lead from a mechanical pencil works best, althought I don't know what kind of let most mechanical pencils use.

I just finished overclocking my friends Thunderbird 800. I put forth that the best pencil to use would be a mechanical pencil .5mm. It was quick and easy. Just make sure you don't get the lines crossed. I did a little bit. All it did was that at 800 I was actually clocking at 600. Use a needle or something similar to scrape away any excess led.
As for what type of led? I don't think it matters too much. I was using generic led refills. BIC pencils are great too. :)
Hope this helps!

Hmm I just realised I should have placed the original message in "Overclocking".. anyway, o/c-ing my Duron 700 was easier than I thought.. I had pencilled the L1 bridges (mechanical pencil, 2B) earlier, last night when I got home (internet from uni, hmm, all that bandwidth for free...), I looked at the jumpers on my EPoX EP-8KTA+.. So first, I tried changing the multiplier to 12.5x . Hah of course it wouldn't boot! But 9.5x works, giving me a 950MHz Duron, oh yeah 35% more power :))) .. My VCore is now 1.84, I noticed that if the voltage is too low Windows won't boot..

So now Windows "feels" stabile, I did have one lockup, but that was because I was playing NFS:HS as well as running SETI@Home.. any suggestions? I can increase the VCore upto 1.92 (I have to add 0.07 V to the setting on the board to get the real world voltage), but is 1.92 V too dangerous??

All in all, Duron 700 (week 34), 1.92V, 9.5x + EPoX EP-8KTA+ = Duron 950, 40°C (104° F) at its hottest) and a happy user.

But as Tom said it, you call changing a few dip-switches overclocking?!?!? No fun...

And I just tested, 2B has a lower resistance compared to HB, so it should be better...

Hey netsharc,

I didn't have a pencil or conductive pen handy so I came up with this one, I've never seen it suggested anywhere before but it worked great for me:

Get hold of some regular solder (thin is better) and take a a utility knife or sharp scissors and cut then end off at an angle to make a sharp point. Then cut the first 1/2 inch or so off and hold it with tweezers near the sharp tip you cut. Simply rub the tip back and forth with firm pressure over the broken L1 connections and it builds up a nice layer. The chip potting they use is very abrasive and picks up the solder easily.

Worked great for me first time and I bet it's more reliable than a semi conductive pencil.

No, I'll probably lurk around when I have time like what I'm doing now.
Intresting threads deserves special attention. :)

Almost like pulling a Crashman or some sort.

No actually, I'm just feeling really down right now after Schumi's Ferrari engine failed in his last GP at Japan-Suzuka which just ended half an hour ago and I can be bothered going back to study.
I focking hate Fernando Alonso, it looks like he's going to take the crown again in Brazil, the last GP of the year. :x

Thanks for spoiling the GP.... AUS gets to see it @ 23:00. ah heck.

Can you imagine how I feel? I haven't even had a chance to see it yet! Gah! I feel like smashing something as well... (heads to fridge for a beer...)

Cheers. Tomorrow's another day.
