Hi,
I've played neverwinter with my friends at little lans for quite a bit and
it has been a lot of fun .. (previously we played icewind dale and <shudder>
Dungeon Siege) ..

I'm looking for a certain type of RPG and haven't found it yet.. kinda like
my old days of abandoned realms mudding.. Dungeon Siege had the right idea
but failed to implement it properly..
Basically I'm looking for a game where you progress in proficiency of
spells, weapons, etc but using them.. ie, you can choose a proficiency in a
weapon .. be it a feat or whatever but it doesn't give full proficiency, as
you use it you become more proficient...

Is there such a game that implements this well? .. coz I remember in dungeon
siege I went the whole game with a focus on archery as the rest of the party
was mainly melee.. and much later in the game one of my buddies picked up
one of those gnomish guns or something.. used it a coiupla times and managed
to get the same proficiency in about 5 secs of using it as I got from using
bows, etc all game.. LOL

Just a thought,

Sean

Ultima Online comes to mind though it might not be what you had in mind.

Try Morrowind with both expansions.

I'd say you might want to give "Wizardry 8" a try, if you can find it. As
you level, you can place skill points in all sorts of skills (swords, modern
weapons, bow, various mage skills, etc, etc) but as you go along in the
world if you use them they increase all on their own (ie if you kill things
with a sword, your skill in swords increases). It has a really nice set of
classes and races to play with (it's a single-player RPG, though). The
combat is turn-based, so that example you gave wouldn't really fit (also,
the levelling up is slower than that would suggest).

I really liked the shareware game Nahlakh:

(Not sure how well it works on modern computers.)

The "by-use" skill system, which is also my favourite. Hard to find in
games. Ultima Online really implemented it best, but as Gandalf said, it's
probably not what you're looking for. Morrowind comes close, so, that'd be
my recommendation.

Actually, World of Warcraft uses a similar system also, but with some
twists.

I thought of that too, partially because he mentioned realms mudding.
An MMORPG without a class/level based structure seemed to fit what he
was looking for, and UO is the only one I could think of that fit.

Betrayal at Krondor. It's free nowadays, probably available from
Sierra's site. I would have to play it again, but skills either were
trained by use or you got skill points too slowly to not specialise. It
has great story and feeling, too.

I've seen some places where you could pick a locked door, close it, and
pick it again for infinite skill gain. It was slow, but would eventually
guarentee a maxed skill.

(Cheaters can take a short-cut by modifing the saved game - the game data
was written unencrypted.)

Right now, I'm trying to release a patch for sCthAngband to fix some of the
issues with the skill system - it jumped from easily abusable to extremely
tedious ever since the previous maintainer required object collection to
help keep skills trainable. I think I've made things slightly better, but
there are still some things to do.

No. There are no games that implement that well. Well, to be fair,
Wizardry 8 does it almost well.

However, there are a lot of games that do it shitily.

Like Morrowind for example.

But then, I hate that type of system. So what do I know.

Thanks for all the replies.. but not quite what I was after... I was looking
for a multiplayer, fairly newish game to play in a LAN situation.. but it
seems that such a game doesn't exist yet..
I'll just keep on neverwintering! :) .. lotsa fun!

I think there's a reason for that - maybe not a good reason,
but a reason nevertheless.

Consider: you're developing a network game and go through
the time to add a network interface. You stare around the
room at the few other PCs on your LAN. Then your eye comes
to rest on your broadband router, and your mind wanders to
the millions of other PCs out there in the world. LAN games
have every incentive to metamorphose into MMORPGs.

> I'll just keep on neverwintering! :) .. lotsa fun!

I loved the scripting with NWN - in some ways that part was
even more fun than playing the game.

I disagree.. I've played a few games online and the gameplay is completely
different.. when you're at a lan with a few friends, lots of beer, pizza,
snacks present.. a little bit of roleplaying can be fun especially when
you're all in the same room.. a lot more fun IMHO.. MMORPGs are great but
for a different reason

never _did_ try the scripting.. probably should sometime.. could be fun!
