Type vs. Usage

I would like to get a new hard drive for backing up my songs,photos and games.

My question is do I either go internal SATA or external? I know external has slow transfer rate vs internal SATA. What do you think the advantages and disadvantages of external and internal drives?

I vote none of the above.

I am waiting for the eSATA products to mature a little then plan to go with it - the advantages of external storage and the speed of SATA.

Another option is NAS - network attacked storage - either a commercial product or using an older pc.

I have to say gigabyte networks allow for High performance NASs to really make the better option. Neither.

pretty sure that eSATA is just a SATA port on the outside (IO) of the mobo...

on the topic of NAS, extremetech just did a review on one. would this make a good option (i was wondering basically the same thing as the OP)

I'd choose external hard drive from the list suggested above.

Well I think I have a winner. Internal SATA. Thanks for the help! Now off to go buy a new hard drive.

I'd go for external storage only because an off-site storage is the most reliable one.
