Uber vs non Uber

What makes an item Uber?

I'm coming to the conclusion it has a lot more to do with
how difficult/interesting the item is to acquire than
how powerful the item is.

Take the Skull of Kephros(sp?) from Havish. I finally
found it last night. And it is indeed quite powerful.
(I'm not sure how much enchantment it has on it, but
I'd guess something like 1000+). However, it takes a lot
of work getting it (both finding the way to it and
fighting for it), so I really feel my character
has earned it. So have I since, well, a number of
characters have tried to find it, unsuccessfully.

But if I walked into a house mod and found it, I'd
consider it "uber" and most likely delete the mod
from my playlist as a spoiler.

What's uber to you?

Depends on how powerful the item is, and how much work it was to acquire
it. The mentioned skull of Kephalos is an example of a powerful item I'd
personally consider okay as it's very dangerous to get. No problem with
a high-level character (~ >30), though, but then it's not so useful
anymore for such a char anyways.
So basically it boils down to the question: How compares the risk to get
the item at a certain level to the usefulness of that item at that same
level. If I get that "You died. Do you want to load your last savegame?"
message a couple of times, I am much more willing to use a powerful
item. If the risk and efforts are close to zero, it only spoils the fun.

The Foebane dagger is a bit borderline in my opinion. It's way too easy
to get and the constant invisible effect is extremely tough.

Otherwise, as I'm running with Taddeus balance pack, almost all
weapons/armors I find coming from mods are out of balance because they
scale with the original values. I usually trash them quickly or adjust
the values myself if I really want to keep them (like Llilacor).

Regardless of how tough it is to acquire something: Any weapon that
enables a character at a certain level to kill opponents which he is not
supposed to kill at that level I'd consider über. Armors with values way
off compared to similar armor I'd consider über. It's all about spoiling
the challenge of the game. And it's overall not too challenging anyways.

Another example with house mods: Im currently exploring the Ald-Vendras
mod, which offers a couple of nifty player homes. There is one most
beautiful castle in which you can just walk in and make yourself a home.
I do not use it. And there is a tower, still spiffy but not as cool as
the castle, which requires you to go through a quite tough quest. I made
myself a home there. It's *MY* tower now. I earned it the hard way.
Same applies to locations like Aegis Keep from Suran Underworld. Very
big castle with lots of goodies, but as you need to go through hell for
that it's absolutely okay with me. I would not use it if I could just
walk inside and it's mine.

Allow me to nitpick: Assuming the term "uber" comes from the German word
"über", please spell it correctly. If you don't have the "ü" on your
keyboard, the alternative correct spelling is "ueber". "ü" can be
replaced with "ue", but not with "u". "ü/ue" and "u" are also pronounced
differently. The fact everyone misspells it doesn't make it right and
only embarrasses the writer.
Sorry for that, but couldn't resist. Yes, you may flame me for my
misspellings now, too. :)
