Uh oh...Major Malfunction

I've finally successfully installed my operating system after disabling everything I could in BIOS. My logic was that if it was a setting in BIOS, I could pinpoint it by installing OS, then turning on each setting one by one and seeing if system was stable. Well, the installation went fine, though it took forever because I had both levels of cache disabled. First step after getting the OS online was to turn level 1 of the cache back to enabled stats. Well, to my surprise, that seems to have hit the spot. It won't boot, but rather gives me errors upon trying to load Windows 98. When I turn it off, it can load again. Any helpful suggestions? Does this mean that the motherboard is a faulty one? Thanks a lot for the help.

System:
1GHZ T-Bird
ASUS A7V motherboard
128mb PC133 RAM
TnT2 Pro 32mb video memory
Soundblaster LIVE X-GAMER

I have the same prob with win98SE setup crashes at the moment.(see my earlier post, "Major problem")

I have tried the same thing turn everything off and go by process of elimation . i disabled everything that could be disabled and hey presto the moment i turned the l1 and l2 cache back on i get the same old setup crashes.

if it is a bad board how the hell are you supposed to know.

Oh please oh please someone that may have a clue reply. I'm sort of glad to know that I'm not the only one with this proble. I've flashed the BIOS from 1004d to the new final 1005a FINAL and then after some suggestions back to 1003, all to no avail. Is it a faulty motherboard or processor? I'm guessing...oh dear I don't know. Please help us.

The L1 has nothing to do with the mobo... its on the CPU. So my best guess is that you chipped part of the L1 off? look at the core and see if there is any part missing. If not then see what your temp's are. If you are 140+F thats kinda hot. See about a nicer heatsink. Same thing happened to me when i put on a different heatsink once. I loaded the OS but on the first boot it went all crazy. hope this helps.

soup.

Hey MailShot, keep in touch man. I'm going to check my CPU in a few minutes, so I'll reply with whether or not I found any chips in it. The installation of my heat sink and fan seemed to go well, and I didn't hear any crunching...hehe. We'll see what comes of this. Reply if you find out anything.

Hey El did you get your machine working well i did...(about time too) i did the old change my sound card to slot 3 and saved and irq for it in the PCI section in the bios, i also switched the anitvirus off.

But the most important factor Must that the harddisk was formatted and fdisked on a seperate machine. Once i had fdisked and fornmatted it on this new board everything is fione now. Try this out it worked for me. Also need to get a new fan too this one i got with the chip is rather poor chip running at 170 here.

Well, I sent my CPU back for an exchange last Tuesday, so hopefully I'll find out if they test it to be faulty or not. I did in fact format the harddrive on the same board/system that I'm having problems with. I formatted several times actually...and none of those times helped with my problem. Several other posters on different boards seem to have the same problem, and a few of them just changed out CPU's and it worked, so I'm hoping the new one will solve everything. If anybody has any opinions about what may be wrong and a solution outside of mine and mailshot's please post. Thanks!
