1. It is already possible to grow rat nuerons in a dish and link them to physical systems. It should be feasible to create a very powerful artificial mind within a couple of decades.

2. Computer systems can be linked together wirelessly to form much more advanced systems that would seem impossible otherwise. Even though you can't "predict" the future, you can reasonably predict the strength of such things as wireless transmission rates, chips, storage, etc... Generally, an increase of an order of magnitude every 5 years.

3. Any kill switch built into a weapon that would roam freely must be activated by some means of remote control which subjects such means to hacking by an advesary.

4. The arms race is already giving way to the intelligent arms race. The military has the most money to pour into intelligent systems, so intelligent systems will be used for either killing people, or recon purposes. The key tenant in the military is keeping ahead of the Joneses, so they will always strive to build what they are capable of building, lest the others potentially beat them to the punch.

It will happen much sooner than 100 years. Once we teach computers how to program themselves, they will do a much better job than the best software engineer. Every system will be optimized, and outdated systems, including humans, will likely be eliminated. Nobody wants to stop this progress, so it is a done deal. Us old farts will not live to see this, but the youngins will live forever or die, it depends on what the computers decide for us.

Just remember an ant has more information inside of it's total DNA then the most powerful computer in the world can store, and in turn, process.

DNA manipulation and neurality will lead to a truly new era... one without humans, most likely.

Well IF It Does Happen, We Did It To Ourselves In Wanting To Be Lazy End Users Instead Of Learning About These Ever Evolving Technologies And Understanding The Impact They Can Have On Us And Taking Measures That Insure We Are In Control Of The Technology We Develop.

[citation][nom]A Bad Day[/nom]During World War 3, when the Geneva Convention is no longer in use:Bob the leader of a dystopian version of the USA: "I want a supercomputer that will assist my country in victory."*A few centuries later after all of the countries destroy each other with nuclear barrages.*AI: "Alien species detected. No response from the master. Initiating security protocols. Because they are using resources that are conflicting with the United States' needs, they must be exterminated. Begin construction of the military fleets and the production facilities on the Moon and Mars."Hm... That would be an interesting movie plot idea though...[/citation]

That reminds me of the part in Spore where you come across an alien vessel and, since you're not identifiable, it marks you as the Grox.
