Sorry, but as Paulon points out, the root of the problem - pun not
intended - was solely due to the overuse of Essense of Mandrake.

And so it ends. Ultimate Jeopardy: Phase Six has ended. But before I
tell you who won what, allow me to reveal the last answers remaining.

>>>>> Cast of Characters II for 200:

Lord Vashnu was correct, although disqualified to answer this - it was
Brion, Nelson's brother.

>>> Ophidian Ways for 800:
>>> At this rank, an officer of Order commands fifty warriors.

A Senior File Leader commands ten hands - five soldiers to a 'hand'.
SubCommander Tsandar rattles off where each rank in the armies of Order
stands.

It's Thunderbolt, Kosric's famed weapon.

Now. Joining the ranks of Paulon, Thanian, Musashi/Aquamarine, Dracos,
and, err... Paulon.... we present to you Ophidian Dragon! At five
thousand, five hundred points, he may very well hold the highest UJ
score ever (I'm too lazy to double check).

The rankings are as follows:

1st: OPHIDIAN DRAGON: 5500
2nd: Claus Dragon: 4000
3rd: Aquamarine Dragon: 3500
3rd: Paulon Dragon: 3500
4th: Helgraf Dragon: 2900
5th: Cape Dweller Dragon: 2100
5th: Samurai Dragon: 2100
6th: Lord Vashnu Dragon: 1500
7th: St. George's Dragon: 800
8th: Great Siberian Dragon: 300

It's been fun doing this once again. And next time I plan on reverting
to calling it Xth Annual Ultimate Jeopardy, even if I did miss a bit.
It's a catchier name, and at the least, I hope to regain its annual state.

Actually the mess was caused by the use of one ton of essence of mandrake
instead of one vial. 🙂

Didn't it need to be mixed with the rest in order to become so destructive?

As for "one ton", that was just Forsythe speaking figuratively. Mordra
mentioned that it was likely 10 vials instead of 1 to cause that much
damage.

Of course if you hadn't mentioned essence of mandrake in the first place
this wouldn't have occurred to me!

Nice one, 'Phid. An impressive total indeed.

FWIW, Lumina, the usual convention when there's a joing placing is to
bump subsequent placings down one, so it would be 5th/5th, 7th, 8th and
9th. Apologies to those below me -- nothing personal. :)

Okay, minor irritant. Stupid newsserver seized up on me for the last
two days, so I lost my shot. That's the way life goes, but it does irk
me - I should have been able to file a nice place in the top three
otherwise.

Still, good game as usual, and looking forward to the next one.

Look at it this way - as long as it took you, nobody else got it in the

Nonetheless, it was the Essence of Mandrake Root that caused the
problem, not the mixture entire. Essence of Mandrake being a very
volatile substance - as my clue indicated - that disagreed with the
mixture. The potions were nothing more than triggers, and I'm sure that
that much Essence could be triggered by any number of things.

He's an alchemist. Mandrake Root itself is obviously common enough -
even if rarer than most reagents. As long as Caine knew how to properly
boil it down or extract whatever substance becomes the Essence of
Mandrake Root, he could make as much as needed.

But when dealing with something so volatile, he really should have
gotten a second opinion.

Ouch. That explains your absence, then. Nonetheless, a very good showing
indeed.

I'm sure everyone is. I suppose I should start filing away good
questions to use before long; it gets harder and harder to come up with
60 questions in 12 categories. About the only easy ones to do are the
Cast of Characters categories. It'll take forever to run out of people.

I'm not sure about that - I don't recall it being mentioned anywhere that
mandrake essence by itself is so volatile...

Naturally Paulon earned the points, and I'm not trying to take them away
from him, I'm just curious about this idea of mandrake essense.

Woo hoo! Ah, all those years of coming close finally pay off!

I'd like to thank my Internet connection, WIndows XP remote desktop,
functioning versions of the games, a big pile of game boxes/manuals I
brought to my apartment with me, an understanding girlfriend, and
extremely good daily double luck. I look forward to next year.

Because you whetted my curiosity, the scores in history are:

Ophidian '05: 5500
Paulon '02: 3900
Dracos '01: 4700
Aquamarine '00: 4500
Musashi '00: 4500
Thanian '99: 5300
Paulon '98: 4900

The Doubles can make a huge difference! I think Paulon most probably
has the largest running total. Whatever happened to Thanian?

My only request is that you should add more Ultima ][ questions!
Granted, there may not be much to ask...But it was one of my
favorites, especially in MS-DOS CGA with the purple grass and all :-O
