Hey guys and gals!

I have a very specific problem and I'm going to try and explain it in a very brief way.

First of, let me start with a sole fact that I have Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop, which has Intel HD 630 as integrated GPU and GTX 1050 4GB DDR5 as secondary GPU.

Everything is working fine whilst I'm working only on my laptop, but since I've bought a new monitor (AOC C32G1 144hz monitor) I've been struggling to set it up to 144hz. Whenever I connect my monitor through HDMI onto my laptop (which is the only way, I only have HDMI on it) it works, but it's limited to 120hz refresh rate from my Intel HD 630, since it's using that during the desktop and browsing time. I also tried going to Control Panel in NVIDIA and setting everything for the monitor to use GTX 1050, no hope so far.

Problem lies that I have only 3d settings in NVIDIA, the rest, usual options I don't have, like on the desktop for example.

I also tried disabling Intel HD 630 in Device Manager to see if that maybe starts the process of laptop using only GTX 1050, but then it actually uses a basic display with even lower refresh rate, since obviously I guess there's nothing to drive so it uses something else.

I uninstalled NVIDIA drivers completely, installed them again, nothing worked.

I'm curious if I can somehow override the Intel HD 630 to use more than 120hz, because a major problem for me is that whenever I start any game, the monitor is 144hz, but I can't get any game to work on 144hz, since it's being limited to 120hz from the HD 630, as if that primary GPU overrides any setting in the game.

I also tried going in Intel Graphics Settings and increasing the HZ on the Custom Resolution panel, it doesn't allow me to cause it's obviously 120hz limited to Intel GPU.

I would really love to receive any help on this, I've been struggling a lot to get this working!

Thank you for your time, and if you need any additional information, feel free to ask and I'll respond quickly!

In the OSD menu I still see 60 Hz,but in game ( dota 2) I have the option 1080 120 Hz...I think I'm playing from the Intel card...strangely it has no problem to run the game in full details (except shadow details that I don't like and I set it to low).

Well a simple solution for me was if you want to run GTX 1050 in your games is to go to NVIDIA Control Panel - Global Settings and then select your game and use High NVIDIA graphics processor.

Other than that, try reinstalling the HD 630 and GTX 1050 and see if that helps. I know it's basic stuff but often that's the case.

Anyway, about the thing I've mentioning earlier, there's this thing called EDID on older versions of HD 630 drivers, I've checked it out and many users...
It is a limitation of the Intel HD graphics chip and the way the GPUs are configured. If there is an option in the BIOS to disable the switchable graphics and just use the dedicated NVIDIA GPU at all times, then you can use that, but otherwise there is nothing you can do.

There's only one option in the BIOS and that's to disable the Primary GPU! I did that and then my HD 630 wouldn't work whilst I'd get some generic display driver out of nowhere.

I'd like to note that I've tried using the screen on my friend's PC, it worked like a charm and recognized 144hz immediately.

Isn't there any way to get games at least to 144hz, I don't care about the desktop being 120hz?

PS - I've been reading that there might be hope to adjust registry through regedit so that it forces to recognize 144hz on HD 630? Is that even possible? It won't run at 144hz of course, but it'll at least give me theoretically option 144hz in games?

BIG PROBLEM right now is that every game I play recognizes 120hz max, even if the game is being run from nvidia GPU, it still draws HZ from the desktop, aka 120hz instead of 144hz

What you are seeing is normal for laptops, not all of them can run at a higher refresh rate from the video out port. Running at 120 is not really a problem, but if you start messing with drivers and registry entries you can end up really messing something up. There is a big difference between it running not as great as you want it to, and an actual issue.

If you want some support for this to find out what the system can do, check with Lenovo support.

Yes, I know that tweaking settings which are technically locked is wrong due to many reasons, but a lot of users reported that they can't get what they want due to those limitations.

I've read everything I could in almost 2 or 3 days and the potential damage is very small.

To be frank, I think it can be done, just don't know how :/

If the laptop maker has not provided an option to switch control of the ports to the dedicated GPU permanently, there is nothing you can really do. You should be able to get 120 Hz though.

Anyway, about the thing I've mentioning earlier, there's this thing called EDID on older versions of HD 630 drivers, I've checked it out and many users reported that on those particular driver versions they could change ''Custom Resolution'' tab in Intel iGPU settings page. The max bandwidth error message is only in newer drivers. Anyhow, I decided to give it a go, and even if I installed those drivers, I still couldn't set it to 144hz.

As I've said earlier, I don't mind the desktop being 120hz, I want my games to recognize 144hz.
