Hiya, noob here.

This is my second ASUS motherboard and I have never been able to use the upper slot for my video card, monitor acts as if it's asleep when the card is in this slot. First was an H-97 Pro, and now I'm using an ASUS H-97 Plus motherboard. Picture is included, sorry for the quality. Am I really limited to using the bottom slot only for my GPU? The slot right about where it says ASUS is where I'd like my card to go so I can use a fan on the bottom. The slot right below where it says Crossfire ready is the slot I'm always using. Ty for any assistance.

Looks like your GPU have damaged PCIE lines and cant work at 16x mode.

1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 mode, (Gray))
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (max at x4 mode, (Black))

Check smd capasitors components of your videocard near *golden fingers*.
If you have multimeter- measure resistances on them, must be the same number.

Hi, thanks for replying. I just got this GPU yesterday, it runs fine and just by visual inspection, it's perfect. I have no multimeter to test it though. This isn't the first time I've tried putting a card in there. I tried the very first day I got the MOBO with a 2 other cards and nothing has worked. Just a black screen like there's no input. And as mentioned, I tried the same 2 other cards on my previous MOBO the day I got that one and same deal, black screen. Do I need to enable some kind of option in bios? No card put in that first slot has every worked for me and I'm forced to use the bottom slot.

I will look into it. Two slots on two motherboards not working properly just seems too odd. I can't help but feel I'm doing something wrong or something isn't enabled correctly.

It is the same CPU. I'm using an i5 4670. If I understand you correctly, my CPU is what's keeping me from using the slot? Motherboard and GPU supports the 3.0 slot but CPU doesn't?

Thank you, I will check.

Site says this but in all honesty, I have no idea what it means in regard to my issue.

Expansion Options

Scalability 1S Only
PCI Express Revision Up to 3.0
PCI Express Configurations ‡ Up to 1x16, 2x8, 1x8+2x4
Max # of PCI Express Lanes 16

All PCIE lines from CPU are used between all PCIE slots, depends from usage: single gpu=16, double gpu=8+8, etc.
Exceptions: one bottom PCIE slot may feed from chipset (up to 4 lines); some PCIE lines may be doubled by switch chips.

Thanks for all the assistance. Still don't know why it won't work or what the cause is. Guess I'll just continue to use the bottom slot.
