Unbeatable for $130 AGP

OK, it's a refurb, but it's <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-268R&type=Refurbished" target="_new">$130 for a 256-bit 9800 pro</A>. It sure is a better deal than a new 9600XT or FX5700le priced the same.

If you got the stomach for refurbs and need a sub $150 AGP card, go for it while it's in stock.

Nice price, and for that price damn well worth the refurb.

Ive been looking for an AGP card for someone. Will that card be able to handle games like Doom 3?

9800s run D3 just fine... not with everything maxed out, but with medium settings and at 1024x768 I think I was running in the 40fps range...

My 9800 Pro w/XT bios and @ XT speeds runs doom 3 fine at 1024x768 high detail (thats level 3 of 4) and with 8x performance anisotropic filtering. So for a stock Pro, 1024 and medium, maybe a bit of aniso, sounds about right.

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too😉
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

Youve been hanging around phial. Quit skimming over the threads  Its for a friends system.

No probs with refurbs. Actually it's really no different than RMA'ing your card.

The aim of military training is not just to prepare men for battle, but to make them long for it. <A HREF="http://forums.btvillarin.com/index.php?act=ST&f=41&t=327&s" target="_new"><b>MY SYSTEM</b></A>

Yeah, the 9800 pro is a solid card although not up to 6600GT standards, especially in Doom 3. Stock speeds expect 1024x768 medium in D3, 1024x768 Med/high in farcry, and 1280x1024 high in HL2, or 1024 with some AA.

What it really boils down to is that at about $200 for a new 9800 pro, as is most often the case, the 6600GT is clearly the better buy. But at $130, it absolutely crushes other cards available. I often see the $150 price point as the most ignored. $100...buy a 9600 pro & $200...buy a 6600GT or possible spend a little more on a 6800 bargain, etc. But inbetween, what is there in AGP that is a valid choice? Most Often the best bang in the middle is looking for either an incredible sale on a new 9700 pro or 9800 pro, or buying a used or refurbished card. And refurb prices have not been great for quite a while, often only 10-15% under new.

Anyway, I follow online video deals almost daily, and just thought this was worth passing on as usually the refurbs are much higher. I was about to post there was a $111 128-bit refrub Radeon 9800, which fits in above a 9500 pro/9600 XT and below a 9700. For $111, not a bad deal. But saw this 256-bit pro for $19 more, which is a far better deal. I have 2 9800 pros myself, 1 Sapphire, 1 BBA, both bought new. But I still ordered one of these refurbs because often a friend or customer would want a valid step up from a Ti4200, and this is a perfect card to offer them to save them money. Here at THGC I hang out with fellow geeks and enthusiasts. But in the real world, few people I know will spend $200 or more on a video card. It is a pleasure when a customer wants top end, but that is rare for me to find as the ones I know who want that just build it for themselves. That's why Ti4200's became my most used card in the past as I could get people to spend that $75-$100. If I didn't have so many slower cards to get rid of still, I would have ordered more of these 9800 pro refurbs.

Anyway, way to long a story, just wanted to answer your question also like WS did, and ask you if you ordered one? Mine is showing Wednesday for delievery as it shipped out from CA yesterday.

That is sweet. I still need to own one of them for the fun of it, someday when they are cheap. "THGC Junk Collector"

I read the "disclaimer" regarding refurbs on Newegg and am concerned about possible missing essential accessories. Is that something I should be worrying about if I buy one of these?

Thanks,

Tim

If you need them and don't want to have to possibly buy them somewhere else, YES. There is no guarantee they are in the box. I have received everything in the pictures before with a newegg refurb, but I have also received just the bare card itself on some refurbs. Often the ones that were retail boxes seem to have a better chance than the oem's of having everything included. (my own personal expereince, but not a definate fact) I hope they include the 4-pin power cable, but beside that DVI to VGA adapter and TV out cables would be a bonus. I'll post back tonight what came with my 9800 pro as Fedex shows delivery today.

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and ordered it because I have extras of all the things listed that it says the retail version includes. Hopefully there won't be any surprises.

Thanks,

Tim

Sure glad I went for it when I did - the card is no longer listed as a refurb for that price.

Thanks for the tip, Pauldh!

I just got home and opened mine. Unfortunately, it's just the card only in a white box, no accesories. Still a great price though. Off to test it in a few, and of course will find it's max OC before lights out tonight.

Bad news. Tested mine out right away in 3dmark03 and the RAM artifacts at stock speeds before the end of Game 1!

I have to underclock the ram to 324 from 337.5 default to be artifact free. I ran 3dmark03 loops at 324 and kept going in to watch, and it's fine. Not sure how long it would last though if used every day at that speed.

Anyway, I am off to see what the core can do, but mine will be going back to newegg. I didn't really care if it OC'ed well or not, but no way am I keeping a card that can't run stock speeds.

EDIT: Too bad the Hynix was bad as the core was good for 423MHz.

With such a disparity in pricing from the other 9800Pros, I was afraid there might be something not quite right about that card. I was even wondering if the "256-bit memory" might possibly be a misprint.

Anyway, do you think the deficiency you found with the card could compromise its ability to be softmodded to a FireGL?

Thanks,

Tim

I'm having a similar issue and would like to return the card I got as well.

Is there anything you guys do on RMAs to avoid paying Newegg's 15% restocking fee?

Thanks!

Tim
