I have a desktop hooked up with a wireless receiver upstairs and a laptop that is connected with an ethernet cable in our modem. Problem is that the ping in the desktop spikes up to 1000ms from time to time.

Is there a way to fix this?

My router+modem is a BaudTec Model:RN243R4-2T2R-A6

You can try a different wireless card, or you can not use wireless.

Any wireless signal has increased ping, even when perfect line of sight 10 ft from router, then it gets worse from there when you get farther away with obstacles like walls, ceilings and furniture.

Your best option is to get a powerline network adapter, tp-link makes a good av500 model.
