Hello everyone - I am planning to upgrade some of my PC and am wondering what would go best with what I want to keep.

Keeping:

Not sure if keeping:

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Intel XMP 2.0 Desktop Memory Model F4-2400C15D-16GVR

Thinking of getting:

CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K - Core i5 12th Gen Alder Lake 10-Core (6P+4E) 3.7 GHz LGA 1700 125W Intel UHD Graphics 770 Desktop Processor - BX8071512600K

MOBO: GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS PRO LGA 1700 Intel Z690 ATX Motherboard with DDR5, Quad M.2, PCIe 5.0, USB 3.2 Gen2X2 Type-C, WiFi 6, 2.5GbE LAN
https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-z69...m_mmc=snc-social-_-sr-_-13-145-345-_-06292022

I’m not too fussy, just do some gaming - nothing too intense - don’t need the latest and greatest.. but would like to future proof a little - hence my ideas for CPU and MOBO. In a couple years I would upgrade the GPU and probably Hard Drive. Not sure what to do for RAM, and I have Windows 10 and got it through free upgrades for a long time.. not sure if I would have to get Windows 11. Would appreciate any advice on what could be better or what else I should be buying now with this upgrade.

I hope I am not overstaying my welcome.. but I wanted to post what I am leaning towards purchasing for MOBO and RAM, in part with the info you guys have given me.

MOBO: ASUS Prime Z690-P D4 LGA 1700 Intel 12th Gen ATX Motherboard- PCIe 5.0, DDR4, 14+1 Power Stages, 3x M.2, 2.5Gb LAN, V-M.2 e-key, Front Panel USB 3.2 Gen 1 USB Type-C, Thunderbolt 4 Support, Arua Sync
https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813119511

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-32GVK
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232091

I do have a concern that the RAM is not listed as supported on ASUS website for that MOBO. While very very similar model numbers are listed for GSKILL, that exact one is not. Do I need to worry about this? I'm still thinking Intel i5-12600K and that Scythe cooler recommended above.

So I went to Crucial.com and did the search on that MOBO, and it came up with a bunch of options. I went back to the ASUS MOBO site and did a search on the RAM and it only shows two options as compatible for Crucial (oddly 4000 and 4400 speeds, being 16GB x2). Not that I'm not willing to do those, but isnt that odd?

Do you mean:

Crucial shows a bunch of options, but only 2 of that bunch appears on the official qualified memory list for that motherboard at the Asus website?

If so, that's not odd at all.

Asus is not going to test a jillion different RAM possibilities. Nor is any other board maker. The only ones on the official Asus list are those it has bothered to test and qualify. There are no doubt many others that would work fine.

I'd buy one of those that Crucial says is OK.

You can of course try to get some confirmation on another brand or simply take a chance.

Hello again! I hope it's okay to resurrect this post. I ended up not making any purchases previously, I decided to wait for the new chips to come out this fall. I am mostly wondering if I can simply upgrade to the new Intel chip with the same updates to my PC we already talked about on this thread. To put it all together...

Currently Have/Keeping:

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 8GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card 08G-P4-6678-KR

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 220-G2-0750-XR 80+ GOLD 750W Fully Modular EVGA ECO Mode

Will these all work together? I have read that the new Intel chips get pretty hot, do I need to worry about the choice of cooler I have listed here or is it enough? Is the PSU still enough? Mainly I want to play Overwatch 2 on highest settings, and later Hogwarts Legacy at as good as I can get with the GPU I have.

Also, I am considering getting an M.2 SSD, so any suggestions there would be appreciated.

The 13600k is said to work on Z690 motherboards BUT I think that you would need to update the BIOS on the Z690 first. If that would be a hassle for you, the alternative is to get a Z790 motherboard that already has the correct BIOS.

Standard recommendation for an M.2 SSD is something like Samsung 970 Evo Plus or WD SN750.....UNLESS you are obsessed with benchmarks. You could spend more to get the latest and greatest but likely could not tell the difference.

Scythe Fuma 2 is above average and should be fine. Not absolute top of the line, but you shouldn't need top of the line unless you have some unusual situation like overclocking, bad case airflow, very high room temps, extreme fear of temps, etc.

Ideally....read more reviews of this newest stuff over the next few weeks to gather more info about motherboards and cooling issues on 13th gen CPUs.

I probably don’t want to deal with the BIOS update honestly lol, would this be a good option with everything we’ve discussed here?

ASUS Prime Z790-P WiFi D4 LGA 1700 (Intel 12th&13th Gen) ATX Motherboard (PCIe 5.0, DDR4, 14+1 DrMOS, 3x M.2, WiFi 6, Bluetooth v5.2, 2.5Gb LAN, Front Panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB Type-C, Thunderbolt 4 (USB4) Support, Arua Sync)

I think you’re right about waiting to see how the CPU thing goes, and this MOBO isn’t even out yet (though soon). I’m afraid things are going to sell out though, especially with the Holidays coming.. but I guess I shouldn’t be in such a rush lol.

Also.. is Windows 11 still recommended for utilizing the new Intel CPUs?

That motherboard looks good.
Get your pre-order in. You can always change your mind.
Motherboard has robust vrm heatsinks, i/o panel has a decent complement of outputs.
Includes wifi. A lot to like
If you are starting with no OS, you might as well start with windows 11.
