Question Upgrade CPU only

I had a computer built for me almost 5 years ago now. I upgraded my GPU last year to a 1660 Ti. The CPU is an i5-7500, which I am thinking of upgrading to something like an i5-9600K.
  • The motherboard is a MSI B250M Mortar mATX LGA 1151 DDR4 2PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 DP DVI USB3.1 Crossfire
  • The power supply is a Corsair CX Series CX550M 550W ATX 12V 80 plus Bronze
  • Case is a Fractal Design Define Mini C mATX
Should I be able to get an 15-9600K and just swap it? Would anything else be required? Is there more information necessary to even answer this question?

I mostly use the computer for normal household use, and games that are not cutting edge, other than that I always buy Assassin's Creed and Civ as soon as a new one comes out. My current build plays both acceptably, but can be a little sluggish esp in loading.

...and from what I recall the 7700k is rather pricey.....as it's the fastest CPU for a number of motherboards, so the demand is higher.

Yeah. I need to look at an option with a new motherboard, whether that's putting one in my current case, or doing a new build and dropping some of my current parts in. Back to the drawing board...

Also about as fast as a 10th gen i3, so you can certainly upgrade for less.

You already have DDR4, how fast is it? If it is 3000 or higher, you can keep that at least.

B560 motherboard and an i5-11400 will be a huge improvement. 10400F if you want to stick on the cheaper side.

Get what you have to run as well as it can before thinking about upgrading.

I can turn stuff off if there's a diagnostic purpose. But the stuff that's running is stuff that will always be running. Steam, Plex, Google sync, Realtek Audio, Windows security, Nvidia updater, etc. I can turn that stuff off for a test, but I'm not going to turn it off in general.

Nobody's asking you to turn it off in general. But to test the performance of your machine in a benchmark.

How many things in startup could you run on an as needed basis versus letting them run constantly and chewing up your limited horsepower?

I have no idea. But starting up Civ 6 before I disabled all of them took 56 seconds. And starting up Civ 6 after I disabled all of them took 57 seconds. Are they the issue?
 
I turned off everything in my "startup apps" folder. The only thing showing up in my system tray now is "NVIDIA settings". Here's the result:

Looking better now your limited power is more focused on the task at hand.
Run a pass of disk cleanup on the OS drive don't forget to tick the system files button.
See if you can free up a little more space on the OS drive.

Setup optimize to run on a schedule for all disk.

Just picking around the edges.
