Hi all,

MH Wilds is dropping in the next few days and after aching over the benchmark and getting subpar framerates I've considered its time to get some parts together for my 6 year old rig. It was upper mid range at the time and its served me well but its not quite reaching the mark on some modern titles.

I play at 1080p with a gsync monitor and I'm happy with medium visuals with 80ish+ FPS (FPS is more important but I dont want to be playing games that look like roblox). Wilds unfortunately sits at sub 50 being CPU bound so I think it's time to get some new parts. The best chip for my platform afaik (z370) is the 9900k which I can find used online for between £180 - 230.

Now for my question. Based on this setup:
GTX 1080
8600k
DDR4 RAM 3200
m.2 SSD
z370 board
550w supply
1080p 240hz Gsync monitor (do run dual monitor but second monitor is used for other apps like discord etc)

Would you suggest an upgrade to 9900k or a new platform of CPU and MOBO. It would be nice just to spend £180 or less and play a game that I've been looking forward to at 60+ fps on medium settings but if a new platform offers say 20 - 50% performance over the 9900 without bottlenecking the GPU and its only a couple £100 more than the 9900 upgrade, then I will certainly consider pushing the budget.

Cheers

Make and model of the PSU and it's age?

What are you currently using to cool the processor? Due to the heat dumped by the processor, you're going to need a higher quality motherboard(for longevity's sake) as I'm skeptical about the VRM design on your existing board. Due to the processor being power hungry, it's not just the VRM you need to worry about, you'd need to look into a 360mm AIO at the very least to keep it cool. If your case isn't optimal in terms of airflow, all of that cooling will be pointless.

I'd look into an AM5 platform, though you won't be able to recycle the PSU if it's a lackluster unit. Intel haven't learned anything besides pumping/dumping voltage/power into the chips and has been the start of it's decline(post-9th Gen i9's). A new platform would also mean new ram kit, at least DDR5-6000MHz.

I bought a either a bequiet or deepcool heatsink with dual fans and an ejection fan on the back and 2 on the top (2 on front of tower) back then because I was under the impression that AIO's were a bit of a gimmick back then and didnt provide a significant enough improvement over standard heatsink fan combos to justify price.

550w supply is couldn't tell you off top of my head got to go home for it but it will be an 80+ gold or platinum decent brand, corsair evga etc because I planned to use it for 5+ years which it has done to be fair.

It sounds like basically a new rig excluding the graphics card if I go up to AM5 then which I'm guessing is the best part £500. Not saying I couldn't do it but just trying to temper my expectations, am I going to go up to AM5 get a decent Ryzen chip and RAM then get held back by the GPU?
