Upgrade current computer or get next gen console?
so obviously Christmas just passed. i got quite a bit of money as gifts and stuff. I have been thinking about getting a Xbox one but then i also have been thinking about using the money on upgrading my current pc that i have which is pretty shitty to be honest. i really dont know what to do. i have been playing games on pc for almost 6 months now but this pc cant handle alot of games. What do you guys think? And please dont say anything about getting the ps4 or anything, i honestly dont care about it. Its either the xbox one or upgrading my pc. Which one?

Well i recently had that decision and i had to factor in questions that ultimately determined which path i took

in no specific order, the determining factors

1. game exclusives and game costs, games generally cost more on console as to pc and on the pc you can get games for dirt cheap on digital distribution sites/applications such as steam
2. what platform are your friends playing on
3. cost can vary but most probably buying a console will be cheaper
4. function, what do u intend to do with this new piece of hardware and would you prefer the functionality of the pc or the dedicated gaming console

in the end i chose pc

also if you decide pc and need help in upgrading your pc, what are your current pc specs so people can see whether which parts need upgrading or not.

You make some very good points here.

i have alot of friends on each platform. i have about 500$ to spend on the xbox or my pc. i had the xbox 360 for a long time and liked it but eventually it just got boring because i had played all the games. but on the pc there are a load of games and like you said they are really cheap.

what i mostly play on my current pc is league of legends. on high settings and i sit around 20-30 fps but it can drop majorly for time to time.
My current build is something my step dad who is a computer tech, just threw together for me for free. i dont know a whole lot of details on the pc just these things
Current build:
GPU: nividia GeForce GT 620
CPU: amd Athlon 64 x 2 dual core 4400+
RAM: 4 gb

is it possible to get this pc to be able to run on the highest settings and sit around 45-60 fps and maybe be able to play a game like battlefield 4, all around 500$?

gameboy1998 is right, is it possible to attain this information, if not i would recommend if possible asking your step dad or a prefered friend to analise your hardware and point you in the right direction

You will basically have to buy a semi new PC, ie Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Graphics Card. At this point I recommend that you go buy the Xbox one because honestly you won't get the Graphical performance of Xbox one with a 500$ PC, But if you could upgrade your budget and/or sell your old parts for money you can get a better PC that Xbox one.

Hello again, thank you for responding. i have compiled a list of items that should be good enough to play bf4 on ultra with anisotropic filtering turned off or at the very least turned down to x2 and having lower resolutions would help your fps. i would think you'd get around 30-60fps.

1. Central Processing Unit
2. Graphics Card
3. Power Supply
4. Mother Board
5. RAM
6. your case might be fine but based on your specs it may not be
7. your optical drive will be fine
8. you can use your old hard-drive as-well ( re install or repair will be required for your operating system so back up your hard-drive)

1. MD FX-8320 Vishera 3.5GHz

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113285

2. SAPPHIRE Radeon R9 270X or MSI GTX 660

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202077

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127699

3. CORSAIR CX500 500W ATX

you may be able to use that old psu but i wouldn't skimp out on the psu but if your dersperate to save money than you could try your psu but I'm un-certain of the quality

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027

4. ASUS M5A97 R2

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131873

5. you may need to get new ram depending on whether its DDR3 or not ( look into that)

6. cases are fairly cheap and if your step dads a techie he might have a spare one laying around somewhere

7. your optical drive should be fine

8. and your hard drive should be fine

Comes to about $500-600 usd depending on whether you can salvage those other parts

and remember to get a second opinion, always good to have reassurance especially when it comes to seeking advice online.

Hope this helps or at least gives you an idea

benchmarks

getting a xbox one may be the cheaper way to go or if you really want a pc just save up a little more and as time goes by prices are bound to drop a little.

I should point out that those gfx cards have game extras as-well so check them out. they are fairly similar performance wise so don't get too hung up on deciding on either of them, they are both great.

this would be a good system as-well if you were to do a completely new rebuild

you would be able to do this if you were to sell your old system, i would recommend doing this over upgrading. obviously backing up your hard-drive first.

Upgrade your PC.

1. The games are a lot cheaper - as much as £20 in some cases.
2. Following on from that, there are Steam Sales on the PC - one recent example, Skyrim for £3 (!)
3. There's a much wider range of games on PC.
4. They'll look much better than on the PS4/Xbox One.
5. There is a thriving modding scene on PC that has improved and/or expanded many games. There are many people still playing it on PC thanks to mods that give everything from clocks on the towers to extra quests. Who still plays Oblivion on console? How about the amazing first person driving mod for GTA that really makes you feel that you're driving around a city as opposed to playing a game.

6. Elite Dangerous, the long awaited sequel to Frontier: Elite 2 is currently a PC/Mac exclusive and is likely to remain so. If this game reaches its full potential, it will be more groundbreaking than GTA was.

7. Next Gen. hasn't blown me away to be honest and in a couple of years the PC will be at a level that's miles ahead of the consoles again.

There might be other reasons, but those are enough to be getting on with.
