Hi All,

About 6 years ago I mined this forum for great information about my current build. I didn't post then as the information was clear and solid. Many thanks for a build that has served well for 6 years! Here is what i have:

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P
I5 750 2.67 overclocked to 3.5
4 GB DDR3 1600 7-8-7-24
EVGA GTX 260 216 superclocked PCIe 2.0x16

This build has been rock solid, and only recently has shown age with the newer games. Running Windows 7, and sad to say my gaming is not as hard core as it used to be, but want to still run the newer stuff on decent fps. My question...should I scrap and start over, or can I get a couple more years with an upgrade to memory and GPU? I'd spend $200 to get a year or so...what do you all think?

Solution
That build is old..but not too bad... if you want to save alot of bucks just upgrade the Graphics card for now, it will run very well and than you can always upgrade the rest of the parts in the future. Also you can get another 4gb memory for now, if you ever upgrade to 6th gen you can just a D3 mobo and you wouldnt have to change the RAM. This upgrade will probably be able to play most demanding game( depending on your budget for the gpu)

Than later on you can buy an i5 6500 and D3 mobo only.

I would really recommend just upgrading it for now, but if you have a lot of extra cash that you dont minds spending at all just rebuild everything.

In short, get another 4gb 1600mhz ram and a gpu, maybe and R9 380 2GB power color for as...
I would vote for a scrap and rebuild at this point. An upgrade to a current i5-6500 is going to be a nice upgrade. I would not encourage you to put more RAM into your current system, and most folks are running 8 to 16 GB these days.

If you want to do this incrementally, you could get the GPU upgrade for now in your existing system, and plan to use the same GPU in your next system. This would let you wait to see what AMD Zen turns out to be, which should be early 2017, or Intel's Kaby Lake for 2H 2016.

I appreciate the feedback digitaldoc. Your look ahead is what I am missing in this equation. I like the thought, pick a good GPU now, buy a little time, and see what comes of the new CPU offerings. Was looking at the GTX 950, but without RAM, I could bump up.

In short, get another 4gb 1600mhz ram and a gpu, maybe and R9 380 2GB power color for as little as $149 currently. this gpu will allow you to play latest games at 1080p on high settings.

The new processor will work wonders with this card, bnut why get the processor now? Hope this helps and hope it wasnt cunfusing.

Much appreciated Trafalgar. Seems like a plan. Spend a bit now to stretch it out for a while will allow me to save for a better build down the road. And I do like the idea of getting a GPU that I can still use in a year or do. Good to know I can add an upgrade and still get decent performance.
