[SOLVED] Upgrade Suggestions?

Hello THW community!

I am currently looking to upgrade my PC this month. Keep in mind that all of these prices are in Canadian Dollars (CAD) and I play on 1080p 144 hz monitor.

I am currently running a ryzen 5 3600 with a 1660 and I mainly play games like WoW and CS GO (I am aware that these games are not hard to run but some components in my PC are quite old like the PSU and HDD so I wanted to sell it as a whole. I originally thought I should keep my 3600 and mobo and sell everything else but I don't want to upgrade my cpu in 2 yrs).

I got offers for $650 Cad for my PC which i'm probably going to take.

I found a 3060 (used for 2 months with receipt) for 350$ and now i'm looking to purchase all my other components. I wanted the 3060 ti but the used prices are crazy and new you can get a <Mod Edit> MSI model for $620 so I opted for the former.

New parts list so far (subject to change depending on your opinions):

Note: because I live in a remote location I am limited to buying from amazon.ca

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600 ($197) + a Wraith Prism I am buying off someone new for 40$ (this is my favourite looking CPU fan so I want it despite the noise)
Mobo: MSI MPG B550 Gaming ($170) - OR should I grab a B450 MSI Arsenal gaming for $135 instead? Says that it comes zen 3 ready from factory)
Storage: 2 TB HDD 7200 RPM ($60) + 500g M.2 NVME (Kingston) ($50)
PSU: EVGA Supernova 750 G+ ($108)
Case: Corsair 175R case (79$)
GPU: Gigabyte eagle 3060 ($350 lightly used)
Ram: XPG D50 RGB 3200 Mhz - 8gb x2

Because I am selling my old PC as a whole for $650 I will be checking out at around $900 + taxes + my $350 3060.

Since my parents paid $200 of the GPU for my birthday, I am only paying about $550 out of pocket for this upgrade but I was wondering if I should change anything.

it seems all good. I usually chase for the gpu and psu first (gpu find your choice and secure it), and then the rest.

For the ram, and if you're buying a new ram, go 3600mhz from these brands PNY, Klevv, Team, and V-Color for cheap alternative, but if G.Skill and Corsair are priced good enough, then go for it. I use V-Color Prism Pro RGB 3600mhz C18 ones and it overclock great (4133 C18 with tight subtimings, daily use), but on ryzen 5600 it wont be able to reach that much (Ryzen 5 5500 and 5600G could cause they're Zen3 apu based).

For motherboard, IF you dont need the ARGB ports then MSi B450 boards are amazing deal, but if you do need the price and features, B450/B450M Steel Legend or Pro4 gets the job done (Support Ryzen 1000 till 5000X3D), B550/B550M Pro4 is also considerable (if you do ever need the PCIe 4.0), just make sure after you built and make it work, update the bios to the latest one with agesa 1.2.0.7 (for any motherboard you choose) since they include the fTPM Stutter Fix.

Also after installing windows, Download Chipset driver from amd web and install it (Version 4.06.10 as the time i type this).

For cooler you could save up to buy either a good Tower Fan or an AIO, it's your choice

• Not sure I'd spend 40CAD on a Wraith Prism, but..
• Try to get a 1TB SSD. 100GB per game is no joke.
• 3600MHz RAM if you can.
• 650W PSU is enough.
• B550 motherboard please. You've got a Ryzen 3000 you can use to do a BIOS update.

Thanks for the advice. Will be upgrading the ram to 3600 for an extra 15$ from the same brand.

Don't B550 Mobos come ready from the factory for ryzen 5000?

"ready" means there is a BIOS version AVAILABLE that supports a particular CPU. In this example of a Ryzen 5600 which is relatively new (April 2022), a mobo may not SHIP with a compatible BIOS for a Ryzen 5600 manufactured around/after that time and the manufacturer would've needed to have updated their shipping BIOS. Sometimes resellers will update boards to avoid these compatibility issues in their stock. This mostly happens at brick-and-mortar stores.

Look at the CPU compatibility list and note the BIOS version required for a given CPU. Any BIOSes with that version or greater will support that CPU.

IF the board doesn't ship with a compatible BIOS, a few things will happen:

1. Some boards have a feature called "BIOS Flashback" which allows you to update the BIOS without a CPU installed.
2. Some boards will post to the BIOS so you can at least update the BIOS using your unsupported CPU, but you won't be able to install/launch Windows
3. Some boards just won't do anything until until you install an older (supported) CPU to perform a BIOS update to a version that supports your new CPU.

Recent boards from AMD and Intel have gotten better at avoiding #3, but AMD 400 mobos weren't great, they were pretty much #1 or #3. Intel historically only supported 1-2 CPU generations on a given mobo/chipset, and would launch the whole lineup at once, so these BIOS compatibility issues were largely avoided. However, even Intel has been trickling out CPUs lately. I'd say we're very near to avoiding #3 across entire mobo lineups.
