Upgraded Internet yet ping increased exponentially?

Hello Tom'sHardware community!

I am having an issue with a recent Internet service upgrade. I just moved from my old apartment and I decided I wanted to upgrade my service from 50/10 to 100/10 (time warner cable, no other option in my area). In my old apartment I never had a ping problem with 50/10 while gaming. Downloads took a while though so I decided to upgrade it in my new apartment. Now my download speed is high and every "test your Internet speed" site says that I have 100/10 but when I play online games I have really high ping (250 plus an I'm playing on eastern servers, I live in NY). Is there a way to fix this problem without calling time warner to come in? I doubt they'll know what 'ping' is.

Thanks in advance!

speed and ping are two different items that effect your quality. your ping could be higher because of your new place going though more routers in your isp network(you have a greater distance from there main connection to the internet backbone.) also could be an older switch in the line slowing up data getting to you fast. (longer time processing).

did you get a new router/modem when they upgraded you? could be issues there

do you have a good solid loss less connection-shows in modem settings usually-if your losing data packets due to older cabling in the building that can cause data to have to be sent repeatedly causing higher ping

because you change locations is what I'm betting the increase ping is coming from. and I bet time warner is not going to care what your ping is as they don't sell ping packages just speed packages.

Yes I did get a new modem when I got upgraded. What would I need to do to check if the modem is the problem? Besides resetting it...

Make sure you have the most recent firmware installed for the new router, if there's any available.
