I just did an upgrade on the 5220 from v2.0 host software/2.0 firmware to
v2.3 host/v2.03 firmware and my 3G / 1xEVDO upload speed dropped from approx
120k to only 30k. Download speed stays the same at approx 410k. I
called Verizon and they suggested I downgrade back to v2.0, they say v2.3
doesn't offer any speed advantages anyway. It sounded like v2.3 was so new,
even they weren't quite sure what it was all about yet.

Anybody else seen this problem?

I am currently in San Diego area.

I can't address your issue in particular, but in general I am always loathe
to upgrade firmware if I'm happy with a device. My experience with
firmware: if it works, don't fix it. Thanks for posting your experience,
though, as a warning to others.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't presume any tech rep at VZW is going to have any idea
about what a firmware upgrade does. That stuff is usually way over their
head.

I did have some success in getting competent pre-sales information from
Sierra Wireless in BC. I called and told the operator I wanted to speak to
someone who could answer some technical questions about one of their
wireless pc cards.

The call was transferred and answered immediately by a fellow with an accent
who seemed like an actual engineer:

(Avoid specifics with the operator if possible. If you mention the PC5220,
they may tell you to call Audiovox:
