I was going to upgrade to an AM2 board but then Core2 Duo came along... My aging m/b did pack in so I bought the cheapest stop gap components. Now I've upgraded to a 20" monitor, my budget graphics card isn't coping and I really need to complete the upgrade.
I quite liked the nvidia 5xx motherboards for AM2, so I was thinking about buying the same for Conroe but they still aren't really here in the UK. I'd only want the 570 variant, but are they really worth it? Out of practicality I'm presuming not. I've got this current basket set to go at Dabs, but crucially the memory isn't there so I'm just waiting, watching the price drop on a daily basis .
I don't have an ueber power supply and want the case to keep as quiet as possible so I'm avoiding SLI and (probably) overclocking. The main obssession at the moment is WoW, so I'd just like to get from the average 20fps I'm getting (but down to 6fps with lots of action) up to a comfortable 60fps, which is standard for an lcd display.
Any comments on the following?
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Socket 775 2.4GHz (£213.81)
To me, without overclocking, this has the best performance/price combination.
Gigabyte S775 Intel 965P ATX GLan HD 8CH Audio ATX S/Pipe (£118.59)
This seemed to get some good reviews, in the absence of 570 m/bs. My case is a little tight, so it can't take those m/bs that take the floppy/ide cables off the edge of the m/b - they have to come 'straight up'.
Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1GB 240-Pin DIMM XMS2-6400 CL4 (£218.32)
This is more or less whatI would have got for AM2, but still waiting for stock to come in...
XFX GeForce 7900GS 256MB DDR3 PCIE XT Edition Dual DVI Core Clock Speed 480Mhz (£152.08)
Overclockers have a 'silent' version but that's yet to ship. 7900GS looks like it has good performance, a good price and burns as little as 35W(?). I've not tried an ATI card before so I don't really no if they have a competitor for this.
Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (£42.30)
I'm finding it quite hard to try out any mice - our local PC World is gradually transforming into Staples - so this is going more on reputation (I have an logitech mouse, with the feet long gone and the surface worn off the buttons...). Has anyone tried the G7 wireless mouse? (I've never used a wireless mouse)
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard (£51.11)
I don't really see the point of the LCD but the extra gaming buttons are well placed for WoW, and I'd love not to be accidentally hitting the start menu combination <ctrl+esc>. The original version of this appears to have had a problem with the key top surface wearing off, but I've read that this has been replaced with a tougher finish.
My current keyboard is quite loud - is this one any quieter? That would be food for late night sessions when everyone else is asleep .
Thanks
