So recently I have acquired a Intel i5 - 6500 CPU but it has a LGA 1151 socket whereas my old i3-3240 has a LGA1155.
I was wondering if I should send back the new CPU and buy one with a 1155 socket or if I should upgrade my motherboard to something more suitable. If so can anyone suggest a motherboard that would fit both the i5-6500 and a GTX 750 ti

Tough call. LGA1155 hasn't seen a new CPU since 2012, but the i5 3570 and i7 3770 are both very respectable CPUs that would drop into your current board.

The i5 6500 is not compatible with DDR3 RAM, so you'd need new RAM too. You can get a decent board for it for $50, and 8GB of DDR4 for $30, and it would probably outperform even the older i7 while drawing less power, but a new motherboard usually means a new copy of Windows too.

it depends how much u wana put into it, like ecky stated, you also need to buy more ram altough the 6500 is newer and blah blah ddr4 blah blah. but if u dont mind buying more ram and a bit more on the mobo, your futureproofed for ht enext 3-4 years
