Upgrading from 1.6 to 2.6

I am considering upgrading my p4 1.6 to the max of 2.6. It is based on the 845 chipset 400mhz fsb. I have two questions, one do I need a more powerful power supply? The on I have now is 300 watts. Two, will I see any performance gained? I have 512mb ddr sdram, Radeon 9700 pro.

The 2.4C is the best bang for the buck. There is no point buying a <b>2.6GhzB</b>. Because, sooner than later u will feel the need to upgrade ur mobo and RAM. So buy the best chip out ther now so that when u upgrade ur mobo and RAM, u'll be future proof for a while

And definitely, u do need a bigger/better power supply. Fortron, Antec, Enermax are all good. Get one with at least 400W.

EDIT: U need a bigger/better Power Supply only if u getting a P42.4C. U also need one if ur existing one is giving u probs, i hope thats not the case though.

honest mistake... i didn't bother much to check if there was anything like a 2.6B. Anyways, tnx for providing the compact Power Consumtion list there. I was wrong about that too. I just thot since he has a 9700Pro, he better upgraded his PSU as well with the new CPU.

He said 2.6 which in most poeples estimation is close enough, anything beyond that is a waste of time, and is largely irellevant.

What was the point of nitpicking on the .06Hz of the CPU?

Its rediculous to nitpick like that.

There is a 2.6b you are correct, Zyprd was just nitpicking on the .06Hz you left out, and quite frankly it was out of line on his part.

Personally i wouldnt listen to any of his BS.

The actually is a 2.60ghz 400mhz socket 478 processor. That is the fastest one according to intel.com. Thanks for all the help guys!

Further research proved there was infact a p4 2.6Ghz w/400FSB.

Xeen, look here: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845pt/pt_proc.htm.

It requires a bios upgrade, but is possible to do 2.6 at 400mhz fsb. Newegg.com has them for around $210 US.

Wrong, there are 2.50 and 2.60GHz 400 bus processors, Tom's has even tested them. They are just harder to find.

He says his board only supports 400 bus, which eliminates the 2.66.

What mobo/chipset exactly are you running? If you're only on a 845E, chances are you won't be able to run the new 800Mhz FSB chips.

...And all the King's horses and all the King's men couldn't put my computer back together again...
