hi i built a computer system in december and only had 1 stick of 8gb 1866 hyper x rage fury...
this week i bought 3 extra 1866 rage fury sticks 8gb so there all identical ram chips.... i can put in 16gb of any sticks in like slot a1 b1 or a2 and b2 slots and machine will boot fine ... i have also tried each stick seperate and they all work fine.....but if i try 3 or 4 my screen will not come on

but 16 gb in any of the dual channel slots alone works fine ive never run into this issue before and not shure what can be causing the problem unless theres a fault with the mother board using all 4 slots

asrock 970 pro 3 motherboard
AMD FX8350 processor
600w psu
radeon r9 280x graphics card
4 x 8gb rage fury 1866 ddr 3 ram

Are you totally sure the specs on the new 3 DIMMs are EXACTLY identical to the original 1 DIMM, as in CAS ratings, chip ranks, part number? Otherwise I'm not sure, might be worth contacting Asrock about. For my Asus AM3+ motherboard though, only certain mfr's RAM were certified to work at 1866 even though the RAM was rated for 1866 itself. I had problems getting a stable system with the first set of 4 4Gb 1866 I bought because they weren't on the list. AFAIK 1866 isn't really an advantage over 1333-1600 with AM3+ CPUs anyway.

DRAM manufacturers simply test with whatever they have available. There's no way they can test with all available DRAM, even if they had it 😉 The above is a common occurance of having problems that comes from mixing DRAM. There are no guarantees when mixing DRAM, even using the same exact model, more on this in my article (Item 2) here:

i have turned the ram speed from 1866 to 1600 manually on the mb now it works with all 4 stick perfect so could it be that the motherboard cant support 4 sticks 1866 and i have tried all ure other options and thanks for youre help just wondering what sort of impact it will have when im playing games like would i be better to have 32gb at 1600 or 16gb at 1866 running

did not have a nb setting for 1.35 tried 1.36 and still would not turn on at 1866 i'm thinking mother boards either got some sort of a fault or its just not able to run 4 x 1866 sticks bit of a weird one but least even running the ram slower its not gonna be a total waste of money and having 2 sticks sat there for nothing ill just have to upgrade my mb at some point i quess

No running anything at a slower speed will not harm anything. 1600 vs 1866 will not make any difference at all for user experience, but might show a tiny bit slower in memory benchmarks. 1866 is really not worth anything over 1600 for current AMD architecture.

the Fx series ram controller will struggle to achieve 1866mhz on 4 sticks of RAM. the 1866mhz it's guaranteed with 2 sticks in dual channel config. for 32gb in 4 sticks 1333mhz its the guaranteed frequency AMD recommends, but you can get pretty stable 1600mhz in most cases.
There are guys that have achieved 32gb of 1866mhz in some 990Fx, but its kind of a 3 way lotery between RAM, CPU and MOBO.

It really all depends on the individual CPU, some FX CPUs have a lot of trouble with even two sticks of 1866 (according to AMDs own BIOS and Kernel Programming Guide the FX CPUs are a rated 1333 MC (memory controller)). The upper end are shown in AMDs Memory and Frequency Guide are shown as 1866 with 1 stick per channel (testing was done with 4GB sticks), but it varies greatly, I run 4x8GB 2400 sticks with my 8370, but have seen 8350s that labor at 2x8GB of 1866 and others that easily run 4x8GB of 2133
