Upgrading from Pentium D to Core 2 duo?

Hello,
I wonder if its possible to upgrade my old DELL GX620 Pentium D 820 for some new Core 2 duo processor?

Im looking for a low budget multimedia PC, but this Pentium D is pretty crap.

My PC specs re:
Dell GX620
Motherboard: Intel 945G
GPU: HD 5450 512 MB
CPU: Pentium D 820 (2,80 GHZ)
RAMM: 2 GB DDR2 dual channel
HDD: 1 TB Baracuda sata drive
and its the SFF desktop case ( the middle sized one)
got the standard stock PSU: 275 W BTX

Yah, some friends told me this PC would be great for playing HD movies and playing old games like Battlefield 1942 or Battlfield 2 (Project reality mod). So I went to the local (used brand name pc) shop and bought this one, fitted it with the ati HD 5450. Dumbest ******* idea number 2 in my life. Had to sell my banned xbox 360 for this crap, what to say.......my older GX 270 with 8600 GT and 2 GB ram outperforms this piece of DELL *** easy. Now someone told me upgrading this crap to core 2 duo would make this build really good for Multimedia/HD content and old games like PR or BF2

A Pentium D should handle those games, I played them on mine with only an ati 3870 card. It played wow & aion decently too. All on (about) medium settings of course.
You might want to check your HDD's. They might be 5400rpm drives whereas I had 7200rpm drives in raid0 and seeing 200+mb/s transfer rates. I also had gamer ram in that system. It was pretty sweet and I could overclock on air to almost 4ghz during the colder winter months and 3.5 during the summertime.

Ahhhh. The good old days... now it runs Windows Home server

I agree with popatim
the Pent D should be able to easily play those games
the HD5450 is not a gaming card by no means
Better off with a low pro HD4670 or HD5670
both are low pro and low power draw

with that said
take a look at this

945g supports core2duos

I own a piece of Dell *** Optiplex 745 with Core2Duo E4300
I would recommend you use C2D E2xxx,E4xxx or E6xxx
core 2 duos that are 65watt 65nm 800 or 1066mhz fsb
those are your safest bets
watch out for some of the E6xxxx series since some are 45nm Wolfdales on a 1333mhz fsb
Stick to Conroe/Allendale C2Ds

Looking at the spec sheets Dell didnt list any C2Ds for the GX620
but Intel says the chipset can take it
Problem is Dell might of locked C2Ds out of the BIOS


With THAT said GET a Better Graphics Card
the 5450 is NOT a gaming card at all
a HD4650,HD4670,HD5670,HD5570 wouild all be better
also a GT240 in low profile would be good too.

My piece of ### Dell Optiplex 745 C2D E4300 with a HD4650
will play Bioshock 2,Crysis Warhead,Left 4 Dead 2,Oblivion etc
no problem at lowered settings (usually 1920x1080 med to high no AA/AF)
