Upgrading Ram, no display if I add 3rd and 4th sticks

Nov 21, 2010
I am helping a family member with a RAM upgrade. He wanted to upgrade to 16gb. He was coming up from the system installed DDR3-1333 (PC3 10600) 8gb - 4 x 2GB sticks. Initially he upgraded to 12GB after purchasing an 8GB kit (2 x 4GB) however he bought DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800). He told me that the PC was running fine. He then thought he'd buy another 8GB kit to make it 16GB, purchasing the same type of ram again. This time the PC's display would not come up. This is when I looked at it. The only way I can get the system to with those 6 sticks of ram choices is with the original 2 x 2GB sticks.

Since he wants 16GB, I purchased the Patriot 16GB kit PGV316G1333ELQK which is DDR3-1333 (PC3 10600) http://patriotmemory.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=5&catid=34&prodgroupid=200&id=989&type=1

Basically if I add all 4 sticks to the system, there is no display, system has power, fans run, I hear hard drive run but no post screen, etc. If I remove 2 sticks, system boots up fine and I have 8gb of ram. I tested all the sticks individually, they all work. I don't think the sticks are at fault because of that. I also tried 8GB of the brand new 16GB kit with the original 2 x 2GB sticks to make it 12GB, same issue.

I searched these forums and checked the sticky: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems
I do not believe this BIOS allows me to manually set the RAM speed, timings, and voltage to the manufacturers specs.

I did a CMOS reset using the jumpers as described here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01925486&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=4007354#N519

PC info:
HP Pavilion Elite e9240f Desktop PC
Foxxconn H-RS880-uATX (Aloe) motherboard
American Megatrends Bios 5.09 1/22/10.

There is a BIOS update on the HP website I found by Google: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-88054-1
However, no such update is listed under software and driver downloads for this PC model number. I did try to update it using that file, however PC tells me bios is compatible with my system. I do not believe I can adjust

He has adequate power supply. Since PC boots up fine with just 2 sticks I believe it's safe to say the pre-installed graphics card is ok. Am I wrong there?

I've explored different reasons but I can't seem to figure out anything leaving me to conclude that one or both of the last 2 ram slots are damaged. I cleaned the PC out with the blown air dust canisters but I did not use any alcohol to wipe contacts. Is it possible that the wrong ram caused this issue?

If anyone has any suggestions, advice or conclusions, please share. Thanks much.
