Dear Tom's Hardware community,

apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum to post this question.

I have Lenovo Legion Y540-15IRH Laptop (Lenovo) - Type 81SX laptop and I used Lenovo service bridge to detect the type just to be 100% certain of the model version.

I would like to replace my existing 1 TB HDD and 2X 8GB of RAM sticks for the following: 1TB SATA SSD + 2x 16GB RAM.

I've managed to find products online that I think would suit the laptop, but I would also like to confirm if the new components would be compactible with the laptop too.

  • RAM - KINGSTON Fury KF426S15IB1/16 (16GB stick, I'll need two of these - 2x 16GB)
  • SSD Option 1 - SSD 1TB SAMSUNG 870 EVO, MZ-77E1T0B/EU
  • SSD Option 2 - SSD 1TB CRUCIAL MX500, CT1000MX500SSD1

As far as I've researched on my own for the RAM part, the laptop can support up to 32 GB RAM memory with maximum of 2666 mhz?

Also for the Samsung vs Crucial SATA SSD'S, I'm quite curious for your opinion cause I've heard a lot of discussions that they are similar in comparison but differ in some settings.

I usually only play games and compose music with FL Studio, so those would be my primary targets.

Thank you for your time!

Thank you for the help.

I've managed to find two kits as per your suggestion:

1) https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KF432S20IBK2_32.pdf

2) https://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search?partid=KCP432SD8/32

I think they both operate on CL20, unfortunately I can't find those stick in CL15 format (the previous one I've found in CL15 were individual sticks).

What do you think? :O
I think you can't go wrong with either of those. they are essentially the exact same thing. If you do not know how to already, use this thread to learn how to mark an answer as a solution so that the thread will be closed once you figure out your issue.
I'm confused.

You say "2x 16 GB RAM."

and

"one stick of 16GB".

I'm not certain which you have in mind...2 sticks or 1 stick.

Hello,

thank you for the reply.

The RAMmemory which I'm planning to buy and upgrade to is
  • RAM - KINGSTON Fury KF426S15IB1/16 (one stick of 16GB)

It is one stick but i will need to buy two of them in order to get 32 GB (aka 2x 16GB).

If you have 2 RAM slots and whatever is in them can in fact be replaced.....the standard advice is to buy a "kit" of 2 sticks sold for one price. A "matched pair".

NOT 2 sticks that are not part of a kit. An unmatched pair. Despite the fact that they might outwardly be identical.

Unfortunately I can't find a kit with 2666 MHZ frequency, only for 3200 MHZ and I'm worried that might potentially give me some issues.

This is my current RAM setup:

a kit of 3200mhz should not give you issues as it will simply run at the max speed supported by the CPU. Using an unmatched pair is not a good idea.

So it's better to buy a kit than individual units, even if the kit is 3200 MHZ and the individual units are 2666 MHZ?

Also I'm not quite sure on the CL19 vs CL15 part, if anyone with expertise can confirm if I should stick to CL19 or should I go with CL15 rams?

I think my laptop does not support XMP, but I'm not too sure what that means.

EDIT: The 32gb kit (2x 16gb) operates on CL20? I don't know if that's compactible with my laptop...quite confusing I'd say lol.

XMP simply put overclocks the memory controller on the CPU allowing it to support higher-frequency RAM. If you can find a kit (meaning 2 sticks together instead of individual units) you should go with CL15 because the CL is a measurement of latency. The less latency the better.

Thank you once again, and sorry for multiple messages.

Just wanted to make sure everything would be in order.

I'll attach all images from HWMonitor just in case someone wants to double check everything again.

I think I'll buy a 2x 16GB kit (32GB total) with 3200 mhz and with little latency as possible.

I'll leave the thread open for a day or two in case someone can write down something constructive to add.

It's insane the number of people who receive help on this forum and never mark a solution. Not only are these people not giving credit to people who deserve it, but they are also making more work for the mods who have to go back and close the thread later.

I've marked the solution for the thread, sorry about that.

I was thinking of keeping it open for a day or two in case someone can add some additional input, but since the problem is solved I guess that's not needed anymore.

The Best Answer is locked in and can't be changed. Not the thread closed.

Thank you for clarifying that USAFRet, I appreciate it.

I will keep an eye on the thread for updates and additional feedback, as of right now I was thinking of purchasing paired sticks down below:

KINGSTON Fury Impact KF432S20IBK2/32

Although worth to mention is that the sticks are 3200 MHZ whilst my laptop supports only 2666 MHZ.

According to Kingstons site, the sticks above operate on DDR4-3200 CL20-22-22 @1.2V, whilst my current RAM is on CL19, hopefully that won't make much of a difference.

I've tried looking in BIOS for XMP support, it has no option for that or any other option for RAM whatsoever.
