Hey.
I am currently on an i7-4770 with a GTX 1060.
Decided to upgrade to an i7-7700k.
Need to upgrade my motherboard and memory of course.

This is what I thought of:

I do not plan on extensive OC of the CPU, just want little OC capabilites, like pressing an "OC" button on the bios and nothing more than that really.
What do you think, should I get something cheaper or go with this one?

Keep the parts on Amazon please, as this is where I will be buying from.

Better, but for the CPU cooler I'd get the Cryorig H7 over the CM 212, it's $5 more on Amazon buts it's worth that extra $5.

I need something that is sold by Amazon themselves. suggestions?

Lets say I want to save some money.
2400 RAM would do? what do you suggest?
Also about the motherboard - I don't plan extensive OC, I just want a basic "OC" button, nothing serious really.
What can I downgrade too that has this option?
Please link me items from Amazon, as this is where I'll be buying from.
Thanks.

The ddr4 3200 speed ram you selected is as inexpensive as any.
Keep it on your list.

Any Z270 motherboard will allow you a good overclock.
It is hardly necessary with a I7-7700K.
Do not bother with the automated motherboard overclock options such as an OC button. They are often overly aggressive.
Better to simply increase the multiplier in the bios, leaving all else on auto.

As of 1/13/17
What percent can get an overclock at a somewhat sane 1.4v Vcore.

I7-7700K
4.9 74%
5.0 56%
5.1 26%
5.2 5%

I like the ASUS motherboards. They include touches like an easy front pin header adapter.

I find it hard to shop for parts on amazon. Amazon search filters show wildly inappropriate parts.
Partpicker or newegg have better filters, and if you sort on price you can then search on amazon for the exact part.

My two go to sources are Amazon and newegg.

I am now considering a cheaper upgrade:

What do you think?

We all have a budget.
Your new plan is compatible and will work.
But... there are some considerations.

What is your main purpose for this pc?

If it is for batch multithreaded apps, then the extra threads of an I7 is very good. You might even consider ryzen 1700 with 16 threads.

But, if your use is for gaming, as I surmise by having a GTX1060 card, then I very much agree with saving $100 and using a I5-7600K.
For gaming, the single thread capability is all important.
Few games can use more than 22-3 threads.
The value of a i5-7600K comes from overclocking, and that needs a Z270 based motherboard.
s of 1/13/17
What percent of samples can get an overclock
at a vcore around 1.4v.
I5-7600K
5.1 28%
5.0 52%
4.9 72%
That is perhaps a 40% performance increase for the price difference between H270 and Z270.

Most will do OK with 8gb of ram.
But, if you ever will want 16gb, it is better to buy a 16gb kit up front.
Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
This is more difficult when 4 sticks are involved.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.
It is safer to get what you need in one kit.
But, it is a bit more expensive because of the added matching of all the sticks to insure compatibility.

I think I will do fine with just 8GB of RAM.
As for the motherboard, as I take it, you suggest upgrading to a better one even if its somewhat expensive?
Which one do you suggest off Amazon?

If you are going to buy a K processor, you should provide for the option of overclocking.
That means a Z270 based motherboard; any will do the job.

Another option is a Z170 based motherboard, but you will need fresh stock so that it comes with the enabling kaby lake bios already applied.
You will give up optane support(who knows what that will bring).
If the motherboard you get does not have the bios update(they were released about 11/2016) then you will need to borrow a 6th gen cpu to do the update, or, if you take it to a local pc repair shop, they will do the job for presumably a small fee.

Do you have a suggestion for a specific Z270 motherboard that isn't too expensive?
Also, would that 29.99$ cooler be enough?
