Upgrading, What should I get, and do I have the power?? GTX 680

Hello, I currently have a GTX 570, and was considering getting a second one. Now that the 680's are coming I was thinking about buying one of them and using the 570 for physx.

First of all, can someone please tell me if I would need a new PSU for either of the options?

Second, what would you do? I use multiple displays but don't have the money for 3D surround(yet). I have noticed that with the 570 I have now, in 3D it can chug pretty bad on high settings.

GTX570 would be a waste as a physX card. 2x 570 in SLI will outperform the GTX680 but it would be pushing it on your PSU (quality 750 watt would do it but it is a TT) which would handle a GTX680 fine!

Pretend that the 680 doesn't exist for now, because you cant really buy anywhere X_x

If you want a significant gpu upgrade, wait for the 7990. Given the ridiculous 680 shortages, it will be a long while before Nvidia can counter with their own 690 (they can make more money selling individual 680s).

Thanks for the replies guys. I am aware that 680's are hard to find atm. I'll be waiting for a non ref card anyway.

I should have been clear I suppose. I'm an nvidia loyalist, so that rules out ati for me.

Also as to the purpose of my upgrade, my main goal is to get AAA games running better in stereo 3d on a single 1080p monitor. Cuz right now with the single 570 I have to turn setting down or turn off physix to get them to perform well in 3d.

From the benchmarks I see, double 570's is about the same as a single 680.

I recently upgraded from 470's (could not overclock due to noise levels) to a 680. I believe I have your exact monitor, which means we definitely need to stick with Nvidia for 3D vision. I have noticed a definite improvement in performance going from two 470's to a 680 and most noticeably is that it isn't retardedly loud.

I play Crysis 2 maxed with DX11 patch and high texture pack. Most the time I'm pinned at 60 FPS and occasionally drop to as low as 50 FPS. It's really good with Crysis 2.

With Skyrim, I play it at about high settings without AA and get about 50 FPS (I am assuming Skyrim is held back mostly by my CPU as it's not really that hard on GPU's).

The Witcher 2 is still a struggle. I have to turn down settings to maintain good FPS, though the prologue is by far the most difficult section.

I've also had good success with Dragon Age 2, gothic 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur with a mod by Helix. You should check out this site for 3D: http://helixmod.wikispot.org/gamelist

Anyways, the cost effective upgrade is getting a 2nd 570, but I can say a single 680 does great.

Thanks for the great reply and the info. The worst performance in 3D for me so far has been games with a lot of physix features. That's why I mentioned it above. A good example would be the Batman games or the Rocket Sled demo, they just kill the framerate when i turn 3d on.
