Upgrading XPS T600r

I'm thinking of upgrading my friend's Dell. It's got only 64MB memory,
9G HD, and Pentium 3 running at 600mhz. I've tried the Crucial web
site for memory upgrade, but they're asking $117 for 256 memory and
suggest 512 for optimum performance. Top memory capacity for this
model is approx 758MB. Spending over $225 just for memory seems like a
hell of lot when NEW Dells are selling for $349. Does anybody out
there know of a more cheaper way to upgrade memory, or just throw the
old one out and get a new one.

Thanks in advance....

The biggest problem is that cheaper high density memory
won't work in this system. Also, it's doubtful that, given the slowness
of the CPU and FSB, upgrading the memory to 512MB would be
very useful. 256MB is plenty, which if you leave the original
64MB there gives him 320MB at a cost of $118.
Then for a further $120 PowerLeap's
PL-iP3/T with a 1.4 GHz Celeron will speed things up.
That, IMHO is about as far as I'd go with that machine as
long as I could keep it for at least another 2 years.
The final call is up to him/you and will also depend on what
he does with the machine. Upgrading the video and hard drive
would drive the upgrade cost up into an area where a new machine
would make more sense.

you essentially answered your own question. you can quickly overspend on
upgrades and may be better off just saving your money to put towards
something new. but having said that i find that this machine can still be
upgraded to a useable system for about $100... if you watch local
advertisement for sales on pc100 type memory you can often find 128mb sticks
for just $20 after rebate (be sure to check how many rebates you are allowed
per household), and you can often find a 20gb+ hard disk for under $50. a
fast new hard disk and three sticks of 128mb pc100 gives you a system that
will run win98 or even xp well. not a gamming machine, but perfectly good
for word processing, surfing, and email. this system has a max front side
bus speed (external processor speed) of just 100Mhz so a faster processor is
not going to help much since you are already at 600Mhz/100fsb. you could
use a powerleap 1.4ghz/100fsb celeron but the cost of it along with the
memory and a windows xp license a argument to buy new... good luck.

Buy new. Sell it if you can or part it out.

Sadly, the memory upgrades have become too damned expensive for most folks
to consider extending the life of these durable systems.

I've been upgrading the ones I come across with RAM purchased from ebay to
cut those costs in half or better.

That machine with 512mb of RAM would run Windows XP for most basic home or
small office uses, but no one in their right mind is going to pony up $200+
bucks to do so...

You're right, it is a lot for a memory upgrade, especially on a computer
that old (no matter how nice a computer it is). IMHO you'd be better off
buying a new one. Even with more RAM you'd still have an old computer
(FSB, video bus, etc.). :-(
