Question USB Audio Device (This device cannot start. (Code 10))

Hi,

I've had the Klipsch R-51pm speakers for a while now and I used the included usb-a to usb-b cable to use them on my desktop pc. For a while now the usb connection hasn't worked at all and when I take a look at device manager, it states that
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR"

I've tried resetting the speakers to their factory settings, tried all the ports on my pc, tried another cable, tried deleting the LowerFilters from regedit and all kinds of different "solutions", but none of them work for me. The weird things is that when I plug the speakers with the same cable to my macbook pro, the speakers work just fine. I took a short video of me showing this problem, I hope you take a look.

You can see the error on the PC monitor, but on the macbook side the sound plays just fine from the speakers, so there must be a problem within my windows installation or something. Sorry about the quality of the video, very hard to film while doing that stuff.

I'll post any system information etc if anyone needs.

Thanks in advance

list what you have tried to avoid running over the same suggestions again.

the first easy option i would take is checking for updates for audio & USB drivers on the motherboard support pages.

also make sure you're on the latest BIOS available.

I've done the things that I listed in my original post. Here's what I've updated so far. EDIT: I've also updated my bios to the latest available.

update the audio drivers and eventually update the firmware of your speakers from the Klipsch support homepage

update chipset drivers of your motherboard and others

Unfortunately klipsch doesn't seem to offer firmware for my speakers. Thanks for the reply tho!

Here's what I've updated so far
only those available through the management software, not those that may be available directly from the manufacturer support pages?

there's nothing related to USB there in the software window.

what 'all kinds of different solutions' is what i meant.

it's odd the device would be recognized and listed in Device manager but then fail to operate due to it's connection not working.
i would really think this is just an issue with the system's USB drivers or control of.
all other USB devices work correctly, right?

what does Control Panel > Sound show for audio devices?
if the speakers are listed, what happens if you set them as the Default Device?

If you look at:
you can see that there isn't a whole lot else (nothing that catches my eye atleast) I could update, I did check that page before when I updated my BIOS.

Yes, a lot of people are having the same problem on their PC's as well, problems that I saw dating as far back as 2017. The weird thing is that for some people the speakers just straight up do not work on usb, regardless of the OS. For me on the other hand, the speakers work on macOS just fine via usb.

what does Control Panel > Sound show for audio devices?

Nothing new, it doesn't even list the speakers unless they are connected thru bluetooth.

I actually just remembered that I had a spare toslink optical cable and I changed to that for now. I wouldn't mind getting them to work via usb but optical will have to do for now.

you can try contacting Klipsch support but i doubt they'd have much to say except for what has already been attempted.

they may offer to send another cable(which has proven to not be the issue) and/or to sign up for RMA service.
I might do this. Thanks for your help anyways.

unpair the bluetooth connection

try updating the usb generic audio device in device manager (tab driver -> update driver)

Did you press USB source select, before you connected the speaker via USB to the PC? Try pressing USB on the remote afterwards

DISABLE AUTO-STANDBY (works for the R-51PM likewise)

is the USB-B port of the Klipsch ok? Does the cable sit tight?
just to rule out for sure: Is the USB cable not connected to the service USB connection but to the digital IN USB of the Klipsch?

I've tried everything else (that you recommended trying out) except the "Disable auto-standby mode", I'm pretty sure I have it on right now. I'll try it once I get home. Thanks for your input.

Yes, as I stated in the original post, they are connected via the included usb-a (speaker side) -> usb-b PC side.
