This can get complicated, so bear with me, please. I'd
appreciate the help!

I installed WinXP SP2. Lexmark X73 had to be reinstalled
each time I rebooted. Lexmark tech support said mobo's
USB drivers are too old. Right or wrong, I decided it's
time to upgrade anyway (my old mobo was from 1999 with
Athlon 900MHz - don't laugh!).

Bought a brand new Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra mobo, Athlon
XP 2400+, DDR 400 RAM, new HDD. Everything else has gone
well reinstalling. However, during the Lexmark driver
install downloaded from their site, when I'm told to plug
in the USB plug, Windows freezes up.

Did a clean uninstall of Lexmark drivers. Rebooted.
Without running Lexmark driver install, I just plugged in
the USB from the printer. Got a balloon message in
systray: "USB device not recognized". By the way, during
hardware driver installation, I installed USB 2.0 drivers
that came with the mobo. "Rolled back" the drivers, but
that didn't work, either.

Lexmark tech support says, just get a new USB 2.0-
compatible cable. Can this possibly be the solution? Or
is the problem possibly somewhere else? If that's NOT
the solution, is there a USB 1.1 driver?

Any suggestions/help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mark Y.

After a motherboard change you must Repair Install in order for all the
chipset drivers to be correctly identified:

Thanks, Cari, but I completely reinstalled everything on
a NEW hard drive - no software was carried over from the
old drive.

I dont know if I will have an answer that you havent
checked, but I'll go ahead and post some Q's:
1. Did you check your bios to see if USB is enabled?
2. Did you install the software BEFORE you updated to XP
SP2 (I take it you installed everything from scratch)?
3. Is it possible to install it temporarily on another
computer with XP SP2?
4. When you uninstalled the software, did you do it
under 'safe mode'?

I'm in a situation where I cant get a USB Flash drive to
work in XP (4 machines), but it works on Win2000 and
Win98SE. Maybe USB has issues like anything else, but XP
seems to be lost with USB (IMHO).

And you remembered to install the motherboard chipset drivers?

Yeah, the VIA 4 in 1 drivers that came with the mobo. Did
that as soon as I had WinXP up and running.
