Update: Something as simple as a systemrecovery was the solution. I still don't know what caused it, but for now it works!

Dear community,

A few days ago, I got home and booted up my desktop as usual. But this time I realized that none of my USB-ports were working! That is: Neither my mouse nor keyboard would respond once the computer had booted.

I have tried out the mouse and keyboard on my laptop, where they both work perfectly fine.
My mouse and keyboard BOTH work in BIOS (that is, USB works in BIOS apparently).

This morning I got hold of an old PS2 keyboard and mouse. These are working, so now I can get into windows. In the device manager, it seems like my USB drivers are messed up (a lot of USB-devices seem to be placed under 'unknown devices' or something like that).

I really hope that you guys can help me, since I have no idea as to how to fix this.

I am running windows 8.1.
I have tried to remove the devices in the device manager and make the device manager find them again - no improvement.
I have asked windows to look for drivers, but no drivers are available.

Thank you very much for responding!

The scf /scannow only says: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I have tried removing the 'unknowns' and restarting - ufortunately without results.

I have made an imgur album, with som screenshots of my device manager - I hope it is understandable, eventhough it is in danish. :)

Thanks!

The mouse is not responding to any of the USB 3.0 ports :/

I use a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 5 motherboard and went to the manufacturers website, where I downloaded a "Intel Management Engine Interface"-software and "Intel INF installation" which both are placed under the chipset-category ( http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4953&dl=1#dl ).
After this, two of the 2 unknowns changed - but still no response from the USB-ports (as before, the light in my mouse simply flashes and turns off when I insert it). I have uploaded 2 new screenshots to the imgur album ( http://imgur.com/a/VeiSc ).

Thanks!

Great idea, will do!

How do I check the wires for the ports on the back of my desktop?

Thanks!

Hmmm... Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case in my case. I took the wires out and reinserted them, but still nothing... :-/

I just looked into the windows systemrecovery function, and realised that an update was installed friday morning when I booted up my PC. So I decided to try and make a systemrecovery to well before that.

AND NOW IT WORKS! Halleluja!

I still don't know what caused it though, so I guess I will be on the lookout for what effects future windowsupdates has.

Thank you guys so much for spendig time on my problem!
