use all of 42" screen

i am changing use of a toshiba tv, model 40s51u, from a tv to a computer monitor. what steps do i take to get the picture to be full size on a 42" screen. at the moment, both the left and right sides of the screen are blank by almost 5" per side?

Hello... Typically TV are set to display 16:10 aspect ratio and a GPU's are defaulted to output 16:9 aspect ratio... there should be a setting in your GPU software/APP to change the output of the GPU to 16:10 for this use. Sometimes there are options on the TV too, to change the Picture size or "Aspect ratio" for viewing Older Movies, Newer movies, letterbox, and Closed caption formats.

I have seen some TV's use the Last HDMI input as a Computer/Special input, and will display 16:9 by default.
