[SOLVED] Used HDD at $14

Solution
Average life is the unknown. Some last decades some fail in weeks.
I have 8 year old 1tb drives I would trust to work another year easily.
I have 1 yr old 4TB drives that can't make it thru the warranty period.

Do you have a way to return it if there is a problem? Is this someone you know & trust?
If you can get to see the drive in a working system you can use a utility like CrystalDiskInfo too look at the drives SMART. Do not buy if you see Reallocated or Uncorrectable sectors, these mean sectors on the drive have failed on the disk and it is not in good shape. Sectors are where the drive stores the actual data.

Granted, $14 is not what I'd call a huge risk....; if I was just tinkering with a FreeNAS build and wanted 4 of them to play with RAIDz options, I'd give them a try ...perhaps. But if it were data I wanted to keep/use, and with new 'old stock' 1 TB spinning drives often on sale at only $25-$40, and 2 TB drives at little more....why bother....?
