Having a bit of a problem with the above!

I'm trying to set up a couple of User Accounts on a XP Pro set up. I set up
the account and assign a password, say 'hello1', save the account and all
seems fine. But the when I go back to the account XP has assigned some other
long (mystery) password to the account and even if I change it back XP just
wont save the password. Just keeps on coming up with this stupid long
xxxxxxxxxxxx password!

I've also noticed that although my login password is ok and working, if I
try to assign me as a user when setting up a connection for a vpn link, XP
is playing the same trick with the password files.

There must be a problem with the registry or a file, but where and how?

TIA,

Philip Martin.

This is normal and is called "masking." XP sets a certain number of
asterisks (16, if I remember correctly) to mask the real password. If you
click "Connect" without making any changes, the masked password should
work.
