Using a 2x2 12v connector and a 24 pin main

So my case died today ... no warning at all. Have never had any problems with it at all until today. So I come home after school and turn on my box and the monitor says that it has no input. I check everything try again ... same problem. Look inside the box and everything looks fine. Fans are all running, everything is powered on fine.

The only thing I can think that I screwed up was plugging in a 2x12 connector with a 2x2 connector. Can that fry your board over time? The thing has been working fine since I built it. Also, my case came with no speaker so I can't diagnose the issue with sound. Oh, and the motherboard is a 2x12/2x4 compatible case. It also says it is compatible with 2x2/2x10.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
Processor is AMD Phenom 2 x2
Video Card is BFG Tech 8600 GTX

You are just a little unclear, but if this is a formerly working system that just died, your power supply was plugged in correctly.

What kind of PSU?

This is why you need a system speaker.

PSU is a Logisys 575W Dual Fan PCI Express


So using a 2x12 main connector with a 2x2 12v wouldn't have caused the board to malfunction?

I'm at a loss for what could have caused this then.

So what's my next step until I get the case speaker? I have another power supply but it is only 420 watts (though according to http://www.antec.outervision.com/PSUEngine I only need 221 watts but my motherboard manual says 500). I could go buy another PSU to test the system with? What is the likely scenario concerning the PSU or are there several? I have an old board sitting around that I could test the PSU with or would that just likely fry my other board as well?

Is it likely that the board is still good and just isn't getting enough power so it fails the power check thing?

So I plugged in my old power supply and everything powered on fine. Do you think 420 watt is enough to run my machine? Regardless I am going to shell out for a new PSU since my old one has a noisy fan and is 5 years old. If you had any cost effective ones you'd recommend I'd appreciate it.

A good 400 watt PSU would be enough. I like (and own one) these:
