I want to use a second powersupply in my case to power things like extra fans, and other goodies like that, not because the one in there isnt enough but just because i want to see if it will work, but how do i get a switching powersupply to turn on without having it connected to a mobo, i plug it in switch it on but how do i get it to actually power up. please help.

I've done this my self for testing , if u short the green wire to the ground next to it will start (u need to keep it shorted for it to work.)

Use an at power supply with a switch. Make sure that you do not howeve run your cpu fan to it just in case you forget to power it on when you fire up your system. better to mount this externally no need to add heat to the case otherwise you would be defeating your purpose.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Thanks guys, You were right, I shorted the green wire to a black wire, and presto it is able to switch on and off, I am running it now with just fans blowing to see if it gets warm at all, if it stays cool and isnt adding heat to the case i may leave it in there to act as another fan. no worries guys would never run the cpu fan off of it just using it for case fans.
