Using goof-off to strip repainted cabinet - How Much do yo..

Hi there

I am looknig to buy an EM where someone repainted the cabinet. I can
see the artwork under the paint in areas which suggests the goof-off
method will work.

The machine is about 70% overall and I want to factor the amount of
goof off I will need into the price I pay (since goof off in Australia
is about AUD$10/125Ml and the machine needs about another US$100 in
parts as well).

Can anyone give me a ball park of how many cans or what quantity of
goof off is required so I can make a rough calculation?

It took me almost 2 cans of the goof off to strip 3 coats off a machine
I had bought a while ago. The key is patience. At first I was a using
nylon brush to help loosen the paint. Then I tried waiting about 10
minutes before using the brush. Waiting made it MUCH easier.

I think the cans were around 16oz.

Ric,
Goof Off is made largely of two chemicals, xylene and tolulol. I have
found that the two separate chemicals are considerably less expensive
if you buy them separately rather than pay for the Goof Off name. They
usually are available in quart sized cans at home improvement or
hardware stores. I have found that xylene alone will do the trick on
most cabinets. I would also use wood shavings for removing the softened
paint on the cabinet. You can usually find these at farm supply stores
and they are used as horse bedding. They save alot of time in the
removal process and will not mar the cabinet.

Hi there

Thanks for the tips.

Whilst I enjoy playing with noxious chemicals as much as the next
pinhead, I would prefer to use the goof-off which i know works (used it
on the front panel of a black hole) rather than mix other chemicals in
the home and perhaps not get the same results.
