Using modem/router as modem only

I would like to use my Netgear DGN2200 modem/router as a modem only so that I can use the DLink DIR-860L as a router. This will allow me to use the dual band feature on the new router. I will have both right next to each other and can plug one into another.

This post says they successfully got their DGN2200 setup in bridge mode. Bridge mode is what you need if you want to pass the modem output through to a different router..

Yeah, what I did on my router modem combo to do what you are doing, turn off it's wifi function, then i set it's dhcp range to where it can only hand out 1-2 ip addresses then tell your new router that it's ip is one of the ip addresses in that reduced range and allow it to do dhcp.

Your method has a "double NAT" where as putting the combo in bridge mode eliminates the double NAT. Much simpler for port forwarding.

Maybe but sometimes they lock things down to where you do what you can.

I am not as tech savvy as the person that solved it in the first post. I have looked up telnet and am not sure how to use it and later they start typing random letters so I haven't been able to solve it using this.
