Hello, firstly thanks for dropping by.

I would like to send my mum a device that would plug into her modem/router that will allow me to use my IP address at home.

I know it's possible to connect to another computer via teamviewer or something like that. But I want a very cheap solution. Definitely less than £100/$150. Is there a ready to go solution? Possibly something that has very minimal setup requirements? Simply plugging it in, and turning it on would be great.........

I ask a lot.

Thanks,
Richard

2) Yes, you can use a Pi for VPN assuming your router supports setting the Pi as a DMZ or has port forwarding for the appropriate ports. Read the manual for your router to find out how to do those two things

3) You don't need a Pi as long as you already have a computer there. There is plenty of software out there for Windows, Linux, and OSX to set up a private VPN

If you think that the using a PI is simple then you are more ambitious than most people on this forum.

The simplest would be to replace the router at your mom house with one that has support for "VPN server". There are a bunch of tplink and asus ones that are simplistic to configure. The next step up on complexity would be to replace the firmware on the current router with third party firmware like dd-wrt or others. Not all routers can load third party firmware.

If neither of these is a option then you need to consider some form of server which the PI would be one example. This method tends to be a little more complex even if you were to buy a prebuild device like a firewall to provide this function because you still must do configuration on the router to allow the vpn to talk to this device.
