Using my old hard drive with all my stuff in it for a new build

Hi,

I want to sell my old build and build a new one(details down there).
I am planning to keep my hard drives since all my stuff is in there and just buy a new hard drive and install an OS in it before selling the old system.

My question is, since my old hard drives have to adapt to a lot of new hardware, will I be able to keep all my old stuff (games, apps, and all my files)?

Also, feel free to judge the new build.

*old system I want to sell*
i5-4460
Asus Strix GTX-960
8 gigs of RAM

*new system I want to build*
(haven't made up my mind yet for the processor, though I'm sure it's going to be a Kaby Lake i5)
Palit GTX-1060 6GB
8 or 16 gigs of RAM
(I'm still looking for a good PSU that sticks to my budget)

Yes, you might need to do a full clean install of the OS in the new hardware.

Your 'files'? Depends on what you mean, specifically, by "files".
Doc/Music/Video...all fine.
Applications will need to be reinstalled after the new OS install.

Applications on these old drive will have to be reinstalled. The new OS will know nothing about them.

Files on those drives are fine.
Games might be fine. For Steam games, you just have to tell the new Steam client of the location of these games.

I have, and it was my first choice, but wouldn't the 4460 bottleneck the 1060?
I've looked around and some say it would and the others say it won't.

Sorry if the explanation was a bit messy.

I'll keep my old hard drives including my OS (Windows 10).

Just asking if there would be a ton of work after I put my old drives into a new build.

Keeping the OS drive as well?

Maybe, maybe not. Changing the motherboard often, but not always, requires a fresh install.
There is no 100% either way. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

What OS is this?

I'd keep my old OS drive for the new build and buy a new drive with a fresh OS for the build i'm selling.

If I would keep the old system, and just buy the 1060, which 4th gen i7 do you think would be good for the upgrade?

Smartest idea is to put a 1060 in your current buid. Then wait for a while since coffee lake is around the corner and it will be bringing 6 core i5's.

Either way, you'll need to purchase a second OS.

And that does not change the probability of having to do a clean install in this new PC.

But then, I would still have to upgrade my mobo and RAM since the coffee lake line would have 1151 sockets.

So if ever I'd keep my old hard drives, I still might have to install a fresh OS on my old OS drive?

Would I still be able to keep my files though?
(Apart from the chance of reinstalling a new OS)

Best thing you can do is get an external or secondary hdd. Put all your files on there and then wipe the old drive.
You should do this anyways as a backup. Otherwise the drive could just die this moment and you've lost everything.

Also reusing a already preinstalled hard drive from another pc can boot but even if it works it will soon destroy itself because of tiny little problems with drivers and such that were installed to make it work on the old pc.

I have 2 HDDs one 500gb and one 2tb, both are partitioned in halves, my OS is in the 250gb partition of my 500gb drive.
If I move all my files from the OS partition and just leave the OS files, clean the OS partition, use those old drives in a new build, reinstall a fresh OS, would I still keep my old files?
