A friend has this Asus all omboard mobo, A7VI-VM and Duron 800. Would he be able to run UT demo even at low FPS, or will the game simply crash, freeze or otherwise not work?
How about Q3 demo?
He just wants to have a taste of "gaming", he will not buy a separate vid card for this purpose.
Thanks

Are you saying he has no GPU. Oh well. He could run UT ok because it dosent need a GPU to run but you won't really see great graphics.

The best way to get a friend interested in games is to show him yourself, and then show him how little of an investment he would need to make to be able to play those games enjoyably.

It will look horrible. Show him on your computer instead.

Ok, well majority rules, however minority may be those who are right. Will see what he gets on his sys, then show him mine 🙂
Thanks

Have a minute?
A GPU is Graphical Processor Unit, is that right?
And if so, does not a onboard vid mobo also have a GPU as Savage 4 or other chips? What about the Nforce mobo, does'nt that qualify as a GPU?
Thanks

Ok, it's my turn to be poked in the ribs. You guys had me going there!
The question was valid because UT runs not all that bad on my socket 7 K6-2 500+ at 83FSB and with only a tnt-1. Yes it only gets 27/28 FPS, but for someone who is "computer illeterate" (no disrespect intended towards this guy) it may seem quite nice.
I take it GPU = graphics processing unit

It's a little subjective in that if you are used to watching tv on a 20" without cable, then your expectations are less, and when you jump to a 25" with cable tv, woow! And this guy is in that kind of situation.

ps: He has'nt called back yet, maybe UT will simply not start with that type of sys!
Thanks

A stick up your butt with that sir?

I ran the UT demo on my aunt's iMac... It looked like Quake! (Not a compliment)

I get ~35FPS on my old AMD K6-2 450MHz overclocked to 500MHz and a Voodoo4 running Glide. It's nearly as smooth as my main rig because there aren't any dips below 30FPS most of the time.

If I may ask, that "old" k6-2 is it 66FSB overclocked to 75? Wait :
75/66 * 450 = 511 so no you just overclocked the cpu, right? But still you might have a 100Mhz FSB!
Just trying to compare with my P55T2P4 "old" at o/c 83FSB & k6-2 500+ but only EDO mem (128meg) and also u have a Voodoo4 VS a TNT-1 for me. That Voodoo4 is PCI, right?
Think if I get my hands on a Voodoo4-5 PCI my FPS in UT will go up to 35?
Thanks

A little green man with that sir?

Ok, that friend just e-mailed me that he was having a real good time with UT. In fact he was not at work today, and he confided in me he stayed home to "do a lot of fragging".
Just goes to show you that the gaming experience is also subjective. For him his 28-30(not sure what FPS he got) was nice.
He did acknowledge that when the action was intense the quality was bad. Of course, right.
Also the Asus board model he game me was incorrect, but what he has is similar in as much that it is a Celly and still onboard vid(Savage 4 or tnt-1 no dought).
Well just thought I would pass on the info
Cheers to all

i can live with 30 fps, probably because i got used to running 20- fps in CS with my old computer. but with all thoese onboard thingy. software acceleration would proabably be better then hardware acc. maybe around 30-40fps in UT at 640x480x16 if u lucky

I have an AMD K6-2 450MHz (100MHz FSB) overclocked to 500MHz through a multiplier. I have 192MB of PC100 SDRAM (1*64MB stick + 1*128MB stick). Yes, it's a Voodoo4 PCI, to replace the garbage integrated video.

I don't know if you'll get 35fps because it sounds to me like your specs are quite a bit lower than my system. But, yes, the newer Voodoo cards (4 and 5), do rule at UT because UT supports glide which is less sensitive to CPU performance than OpenGL and DirectX.

I haven't tried the Riva TNT on this system, but as it doesn't support Glide, it will suck at UT, I'm sure of that. Of course, the main bottleneck here is my CPU.

I went from running UT on a Radeon AIW on a PIII 733 512PC133 to a Nforce based XP 1800+ 512DDR and a Geforce3 ti200
old: 800x600 30 fps
new: 1600x1200 45fps SMOOTH, 60fps it's a bit choppy but WOW!

it runs reasonably well on a rage 128 16MB SDRAM card, don't expect anything better than 800x600x45fps though but it runs
