Question VGA LED on, indicating GPU problem, but GPU works in other system

Hi everyone,

I have been pulling my hair out trying to find the problem in my new system build.
In my current configuration my system won't boot and the white VGA LED on my motherboard stays lit, indicating a GPU problem.
First, my full part list:
  • CPU: Intel i5-13600KF
  • MB: Asus ROG STRIX B760-I
  • GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 7600
  • RAM: G.Skill DIMM 32 GB DDR5-6000 (2x 16 GB), F5-6000J3636F16GX2-TZ5RK
  • PSU: Cooler Master V650 SFX Gold
  • SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade (2000 GB, M.2 2280)
  • CPU Fan: Scythe Big Shuriken 3
  • Case: Lian Li Q58
Here is what is happening when I power on the PC:
  1. Red LED turns on and goes off again, indicating CPU is OK.
  2. Orange LED turns on and goes off again, indicating RAM is OK.
  3. White LED turns on and stays on, indicating GPU is NOT OK.
  4. Green LED turns on, indicating boot sequence is starting.
  5. The monitor stays black.
I have tried connecting the monitor to the onboard HDMI port, using a Display cable, changing the monitor, and removing the GPU to force the system to take the onboard graphics. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version. I have tried one or both memory sticks. The monitor always stays black.

I have then put the GPU into my old system and it boots fine. I can boot into Windows, install the GPU driver, and the system runs just fine.
I then took my old GPU (ASUS GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II) and placed it into my new system above. Then the following happens:

  1. System starts and clears LEDs as above. When reaching the white LED, system briefly turns off and turns on automatically again.
  2. System clears the white LED, the monitor display works, and I can enter the BIOS.
I feel like I have eliminated all possibilities of an individual hardware problem. According to various website, the different parts should be compatible with each other.

Do you have any tips on how to troubleshoot this some more? I have exhausted all the options I can think off.

That is a good point. So trying to have it switch to igpu is pointless.

Do you have any tips on how to narrow down the issue? As using another gpu on the same board works, I don't understand what the problem could be.

A quick update: your suggestion that the MB might be the problem led me to taking everything out and trying minimal configuration on the board. This included putting the gpu directly into the board instead of connecting it via the riser cable.
In this setup it works. But as the other gpu worked with the riser, I don't think it is faulty.
I will keep experimenting.

I was referring to the GPU from my old system that I mentioned in the initial post. Sorry, that was phrased badly. It's a ASUS GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II
I am kind of suspecting something is up with the pci slot.

It is the cable that is included in the lian li q58.
From the website I could only find "Included PCIe 3.0 or PCIe 4.0 riser cable for vertically mounted GPU"

This maybe your issue! "When using a PCIe 4.0 ready motherboard, GPU and CPU in the PCIe 3.0 version of the Q58, please access the motherboard BIOS and set the PCIe status from Auto Mode or Gen 4 Mode to Gen 3 Mode prior to mounting it in the case."
looks like you have the older PCIx 3 version

Fantastic, thank you so much everyone. That last suggestion worked.

I had to switch the PCIe speed to Gen 3, from the default Auto setting. It can be found in Advanced->SA configuration-> PCIe configuration in my bios.

Again, thank you. Would have never found this myself.
